I'm the managing editor of a regional magazine that's looking to contract out the art direction and design of our magazine's feature well for the next two of our quarterly issues. (We want to hire someone full-time but have just accepted the fact that we're not going to find anyone soon enough to handle the next two issues. We contracted the entire magazine's design for the previous two issues, and we will use the template we established for the departments going forward. That's why we only need the features designed; a production assistant can handle the departments.) Here's my question: I'm trying to figure out a budget for the feature wells. There will be eight features ranging in length from six to eight pages each for each of the two issues, plus two covers. Does anyone know the going rate for freelance feature design? Is it calculated per page or per feature? Any other advice/experience anyone could share would be appreciated. Also, if anyone knows of any freelance design firms that are design forward without being terribly expensive (we're a small regional pub) I would appreciate hearing about them |
