Finally have some job interviews lined up, but it's going to be almost record-breakingly hot in the next week. Any tips on looking professional without melting? (I'm female. Pantyhose are out.) Thanks.

I've been wearing black straight leg dress capris with kitten heel sling-backs and a cap sleeve silk blouse with a tasteful pattern that disguises sweat marks. It went over well at one interview and the jury is still out on the other because a decision hasn't been made yet. I don't worry too much about not wearing a suit since that seems to be passe for editorial departments these days anyway. The look is appropriate for the places I'm interviewing at even if it isn't the most fomral option out there.

Other than that, my biggest tip is to arrive early enough to ask for the restroom where you can blot your sweat and touch up any sweat-damages makeup. If you're in NYC, you might want to sping for a cab so that you don't have to deal with the sauna-like subway platforms.

Good luck!

I'd go with a knee-length skirt and a sleeveless shirt. Bring a jacket that you can put on right before you go into the building.

I LOVE Upward Bound's suggestion...going to try that next time. A few weeks ago I wore a light suit (carrying the jacket, of course) and a dual-layer sheer black top with cute heels. When I got there I used the ladies' room to touch up makeup and put the suit jacket on.

The only reason I'm advocating a (very cute, stylish suit) when I agree that they're passee is because you can wear a very light top, knowing that it -- and sweat stains -- will be covered by a jacket; and because many office buildings are FREEZING in the summer.

I had a job interview yesterday ...
And it was so damn hot I didn't wear either a jacket or tie.

Screw it.

I wore slacks and a dress shirt with open collar.

Thanks!
Too late to buy wardrobe for today (got one of those, "Can you come in tomorrow?" calls), but will definitely pick up a few things over the weekend.

It's hot as blazes. Thank God the A/C works in my new used car. (Toto, we're not in NYC anymore. Not taxis for us.)

not a lot of makeup. that's for sure. you look like the Wicked Witch apres bucket o water. Plus it causes wrinkles--all that pulling and tuggling.
we out here in the west don't have a lot of humidity to deal with. yesterday it was a breezy 585 degrees. But you wouldn't know that from reading the women's mags. I remember working for them back in NYC--you'd think the whole fucking country dealt with humidity--ALWAYS a mainstay on the beauty problem list.
News to NY: Theres a big wide world out there, and a lot of us are buying your magazines--not getting them free at work in our CN, Hearst, or Meredith offices!

a breezy 85 degrees that is--execept here, i'll bet 585 feels like 95 on the east coast.

how we dress for heat in Phoenix
First rule -- drink LOTS of water. Second rule -- NO synthetic fabrics. They just don't breath. General wisdom is that a light weight wool is actually cooler than synthetics, and holds its shape well. Cotton is the first choice. Light colors. I was at a huge job fair today, so I can report the number one choice for interview attire on a 106 degree day: wide legged black pants with a white top.

I had an interview yesterday down on Wall Street. I felt like I was melting through my dark blue suit and tie. Absolutely terrible. As soon as I got out of the interview I yanked off my tie and jacket.
