Topic: Bonds Breaks the Home Run Record

| keltoi2 | Posted 8/8/2007 4:05:51 PM | show profile So Barry Bonds hit more balls over the fence than Hank Aaron. In my book, Aaron's record remains unbroken. Bonds did it with help from steroids (oh--"allegedly") and a strange piece of "protective" hardware on his arm (fine article on the subject by Michael Witte in E&P this week). Being a Met fan, I got a kick that it was a Met fan from Queens just passing through SF that caught the ball. But to me, Aaron set his record legitimately, with just his muscle, determination, and skill. Bonds will always have an asterisk next to his numbers. |
| GrOoVaL!c!OuS | Posted 8/8/2007 4:57:16 PM | show profile Granted, I don't know a ton about baseball, but ohmigod, I can't stand that fucker Barry Bonds. He's so smug, self-righteous, and CLEARLY used steroids to get ahead in the game. One argument I heard this morning struck a new chord, though: even though Bonds was on steroids, so were a ton of other players. This is an interesting point from BB's fans and from folks who believe his record is legitimate. But ya know, it still doesn't even itself out. The fact that BB has broken Hank Aaron's record is a TRAVESTY. Not that I'm not advocating bodily harm to BB, but I was pretty sure someone would try to hurt him before he got in to the 740s. That person would've been my hero. |
| questoo1 | Posted 8/8/2007 5:24:51 PM | show profile i'm no bonds fan, but drugs are and have always been a part of the game. You don't think Hank was taking speed to keep his stamina up throughout the season? I think the fact that Bonds is a smug a-hole makes it that much more controversial. Remember when Mark Mcgwire and Sammy Sosa were going at it? Those two guys were running every roid cycle avaible. But they were "nice guys" who played to the public and pretty much got a get out of jail free card. |
| keltoi | Posted 8/8/2007 11:11:55 PM | show profile Bonds' defenders are blowing smoke--just because other players (hellooo Mark McGuire!) may have been juiced as well doesn't justify Bonds doing the same by any means. If he was patient, he probably would have gotten there anyway, but honestly. Instead, his record is forever tainted. |
| Bleak Spouse | Posted 8/8/2007 11:55:21 PM | show profile Bonds actually sounded pretty humble in his interview following the record breaking HR. He said Hank Aaron will always be the HR King. I think people should go a little easier on Bonds. After all, it's only a game. |
| chucho | Posted 8/9/2007 4:20:19 AM | show profile I don't know much about baseball, except that everyone is obsessed with home run mania and this wasn't the case in the past. I'd love to see a source suggesting that Ham Aaron popped "greenies" to stay alert and active. I've always kinda thought that stuff became more popular as baseball hit a more rigorous scheduled with millions of dollars at stake. In any case I think it's unfair to piss on Aaron in order to defend Bonds. Injecting steroids over the long period of training is quite different than popping an "alert pill" - assuming a.) that Bonds injected steroids and b.) Aaron popped alert pills. I'm more inclined to believe a.) than b.). |
| questoo1 | Posted 8/9/2007 9:35:00 AM | show profile I don't think its a matter of pissing on aaron, its a matter of pissing on the game, and rightlyfully so. It has been and always will be tainted. |
| Iron Eagle | Posted 8/9/2007 9:59:17 AM | show profile I know plenty about baseball- Bonds did this with 3,000 less at bats - he's the most pitched around player in baseball history - has one of the highest on-base-percentages ever. Steroids will not make you see the pitch better - will not improve your swing and will not make a mediocre player hit 700 plus home runs. Bonds is just flat out unlikeable. He's been focused on his own stats throughout his career. He never saw the game as a team effort. He's everything a fan hates about coporate sports types yet he can lay claim to the title without loosing much sleep. Hank Aaron is no loveable dude himself. He will not go near baseball establishment. Babe Ruth achieved the title sucking back vast amounts of hot dogs and beer. |
| keltoi2 | Posted 8/9/2007 10:44:15 AM | show profile Don't forget Babe's many, many cigars, crimedog. Which makes Babe all the more amazing--overweight, paunchy, cigar-smoking, whiskey guzzling overeating guy still sets a record for home runs that lasts for half a century. And a helluva pitcher too (for Boston) before the Yankees bought him and made him an outfielder. |
| Iron Eagle | Posted 8/9/2007 10:55:59 AM | show profile The Babe hit his first home run right here in Toronto on the island. Yes, he was a great pitcher! Let us not forget - Miles Davis was heroin/cocaine sucking addict as was Ray Charles - Billie Holiday - etc and they were flawed giants and we love them all. Bonds doesn't even sip Mountain Dew. |
| JCB | Posted 8/9/2007 6:27:00 PM | show profile >Steroids will not make you see the pitch better - will not improve your swing and will not make a mediocre player hit 700 plus home runs. Then why did he do it? I've heard so many Bonds apologists cycle through all of the tired old excuses--you still have to see the ball, you still have to hit it out of the park, etc. Fine. But then WHY take steroids? They obviously give you an edge, and that's why they are banned. Argue the fine points all you like, but the bottom line is that if Bonds COULD have achieved the record without taking illegal substances, then he SHOULD have. An edge is and edge, and that's what makes it cheating. Period. |
