im trying to decide if it would be worth it to interview for an assistant ed position. currently im an associate (and have been for 3 years) ive been at smaller, not-well-known consumer mags, so i've had the opportunity to do more than the avergae assistant or associate probably does. and now im at a major publishing company with fab benefits, but the magazine im at is still pretty unknown.

i just got a call to interview for an assistant level position at one of my dream mags. it would be a pay cut and probably a big responsibility cut. but its an extremely well-known magazine.

i don't know if its better to take a step down position-wise in order to take a step up publication-wise. my thought is that haaving experience at a well-known mag might get my resume attention it otherwise wouldn't get.

what do my fellow MB-ers think?

i think that making that move based on where it might take you afterward is a gamble. while it might catch a future employer's eye, it also might actually hurt your odds if they can't understand why you stepped DOWN to a lower-level position.

is it going to open doors for you in person rather than on paper -- through the connections you'll make, etc.? if so then go for it.

and if it's really your DREAM mag and if you're going to be happy with the amount of responsibility and the pay regardless of where it leads in the future, then go for it.
