Hi - I'm a freelancer and I was just awarded a big assignment/beat for a national women's magazine. I'm curious what the protocol is to notify my PR contacts about my new role. Is a mass email announcement appropriate?

If this is the kind of ongoing assignment that depends on PR people pitching you, or at least sending you releases on a regular basis that you're not already getting, then by all means send out a blast of emails. In general it's a good idea for freelancers to update their industry and PR contacts once a year or so if they've picked up new and/or bigger clients.

It can also backfire as I found out one time when I was on staff at a consumer mag. When I decided to update my contacts on what the magazine was doing editorially and what its deadlines were I actually started getting fewer invites to industry events. One reason was that the PR people then figured out they could skip inviting me in March for a preview of a product that would well be on the streets in time for publication in September, when I'd be covering it.

I kind of do a general notifier every six months -- what I've written for lately, what I'm working on, links to fun articles -- amongst people that it wouldn't hurt to build my legend among.

I like to do it in a casual, understated sort of way, sort of by-the-way... and how are you?

I tend to be leery of things that sound too cemented or grandiose -- in part because, as we all know, things can change ...
