Update on magazine offers
First of all, change of plans: the Wired offer is NOT going away. We were having some issues with the fulfillment, and based on those issues as well as feedback from our members, decided to pull the offer. However, we were able to resolve the fulfillment issues, and have decided to reinstate the offer, at least until we can better evaluate all the potential magazine offers available.

Which brings me to my next point: Thanks to all who contributed suggestions as to new magazines you'd like to receive with your membership. It seems pretty clear that Vanity Fair and The New Yorker are the favorites, and it just so happens that I have a call scheduled for next week with Conde Nast, which publishes both magazines. I can't make any promises -- they're only going to offer a title if it meets their needs -- but I will definitely communicate to them the wishes of our members. (Besides, they owe us one from the Jane fiasco. :-)

Thanks to all who have contributed to this discussion. I will be sure to keep you updated on any developments.

Thanks Greg, for looking in to it. And for not dropping Wired!

This will sound a bit silly but I never bothered to look into the magazine subscription benefit since I became a member. Was I supposed to just get the stuff in the mail or is there anything I should do in order to make that happen? I'm a member since May 07.

This is too funny. I wondered why I was getting those two magazines all of a sudden! They're both great, but if I had the option of Vanity Fair instead of New York, I'd love it. I think New York is really only relevant to those who live there...and I don't.

Be, you do not have to do anything to start receiving your subscriptions, and if you signed up in May, you should have started receiving it by now. Please email me with your contact information and we'll look up your record and get to the bottom of this.

Thanks for your patience.

Thank goodness I looked at Greg's post about keeping Wired after all because I was going to write that I received a subscription to Wired. I had thought it was going to be dropped. Now I know what happened.

I'm one of those people that doesn't like Wired at all. I guess I'll just pass it on to someone else who may enjoy it.

I also received New York magazine and even though I'm from California, it was somewhat enjoyable. I just skipped articles I wasn't interested in or items pertinent to New Yorkers only.

I do think it's a waste of money to get subscriptions you don't want. I already subscribe to many magazines and barely have enough time to read those I enjoy!

I would have voted for us to choose which magazine we would like to receive or receive gift cards from Barnes and Noble.

New magazine options
I spoke with our contact at Conde Nast, and it sounds like we may be able to get W. What do people think of that magazine? Would you want it? Would it make you more or less likely to join AvantGuild?

Also, I'm still waiting to hear back from them on Vanity Fair. I asked about the New Yorker, but that's extremely unlikely -- that's one of those titles that doesn't need to give out free subscriptions to boost their readership. It's always a balance between what our members want and what the publishers are willing to provide us, and we'll keep working to get you the best deal we can.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

W
I just started reading the issues of Wired I received -- is it just me, or has the magazine started running more and more interesting features and investigative pieces? Better than the last time I read it a few years ago!

I'd love any high-end fashion/trend magazine. There's something about just looking at the editorial layout and even the ads that helps me connect to the current aesthetic.

W Magazine
I wouldn't mind receiving W magazine. It's more a fashion magazine. I'd much prefer W magazine than Wired.

Almost forgot: Another possibility is Bon Appetit. What would you think of that compared to W?

Not too crazy about Bon Appetit. Not into cooking. I'd still prefer W magazine. Thanks.

I'd love Bon Appétit -- and Gourmet even more! -- but I have zero interest in W.

I have no interest in receiving W either. I think that you should try to get subscriptions to magazines that would appeal to a larger readership. A lot of people like New York, but if you don't live in the city or know it well, it tends to be not as interesting. W appeals to those interested in high fashion, and I'm not one of those people.

I would be interested in Vanity Fair, or Esquire, or hope against hope The New Yorker (as opposed to New York). Or even a science magazine that appeals to a broad readership like Discover, or Smithsonian.

Better yet, as some have suggested, what about a gift certificate to pick our own magazine or for Barnes and Noble. I'm just having these nightmares that when I renew my membership, I'll be getting Cosmopolitan or Glamour as a freebie.

I'd definitely take W. It's free and not something I'd buy for myself on a regular basis - why complain? Even without the magazine subscriptions, my membership to AvantGuild is worth it!

New Magazine Suggestions
I've been getting Wired from you & every month, it annoys me when it shows up in my mailbox, since I feel guilty about throwing out pristine-condition magazines. Despite what its staff may think, it has a very male-interest feel to it. By the same token, W, for the most part, will attract female readers and is pretty specialized, even within that group.

Can you get something more broad-based? Thanks!

Will we continue to get New York? I was a subscriber to begin with and just arranged with them to add the new scrip on to the old one so I'd hate to have that mucked up again. That was way more important to me than the other magazines anyway since it's info I can use.

Oh yeah, I don't cook.

Hi Greg,

I have been considering joining AG. However, I live in Toronto, Canada; would I also receive magazine subscriptions at no extra cost? We have many Canadians on this site daily, how do we fit into the magazine subscription bonus?

Vanity Fair!!

Unfortunately, Nikongirl, the magazines are only willing to extend the offer to US residents. But there are plenty of other AvantGuild benefits that you can take advantage of no matter where you live.

Thanks for your reply Greg...
'Suppose that also goes for Health and dental Insurance, Tax services, Acupuncture/Yoga etc. discounts, Barnes and Noble discounts, we do not have B&N in Canada. Theatre and film
give-a-ways, and Rental cars too?

Can you give a discount for membership for Canadians since we do not get many of the 'member benefits'?

While I haven't the time to read either, New York magazine is a thousand times more annoying than Wired. Seems like every day there's another issue in my mailbox, with the cover invariably ripped off due to a combination of the poor paper quality and questionable binding decisions.

So yeah, I'm with the others. Give us a choice, and none of the subscriptions should be automatic. Getting rid of Wired is just going to leave the people who hate New York magazine angry that their complaint hasn't been addressed while at the same time angering the people who like Wired.

I have yet to receive a single issue of any magazine -- been an AG member for 4 months now.

Who am I supposed to complain to?

How about something that is more about the "field" of journalism, design, editing, etc in general? Does anyone know any good publications for this?

Or how about a literary journal of some sort (like a quarterly).

Personally, I don't care for Wired or New York and I would prefer a choice of two out of maybe 5 or 6 offers. They are both about stuff I don't care about and the formats and style don't appeal to me. (National Geographic is more my style). I liked the previously mentioned idea about a scientific journal. (Sci Am or Discover). The state of science awarness in this country is pitiful- it'd be nice if more journalists had these issues on their radar.

RE: No To W Magazine
For the record, I'm not interested in getting W magazine. Keep New York and Wired, please. I'd prefer Bon Appetit to W magazine. At least it wouldn't be all about fashion.
