| Creative Ambitions | Posted 8/13/2007 10:49:40 AM | show profile Any suggestions for what to wear to an interview for a small, creative ad agency- job for either account management, or print production? Is a regular suit/ w/ skirt okay or more creative?? |
| Brena | Posted 8/14/2007 9:31:28 AM | show profile It's always safe to play it safe. With that said, recently, I went on a job interview for a creative company wearing a full suit: jacket, cotton shirt and slacks. When I got there, everyone was in jeans, including the person who was interviewing me. I felt overdressed. The interviewer kept stressing the concept of that that was a creative environment, very relaxed, in which I told her that I'm very comfortable in a creative environment. I thought that she thought I'd have a problem fitting in because it looked like I was too conservative. In my defense, I had another job interview right after that one, so a suit was in order. One week later, I got called in for a second interview, so it was my time to shine. And despite everyone telling me to wear a suit again, I dressed down, but stylish with jeans and a cotton shirt. I wanted to show that not only could I get the job done, stated by my resume, but that I could "fit in" with the rest of the gang. Later that day I was told that I landed the gig. A suit is always best, at first, because you never know. But then again, I'd follow my gut. |
| Creative Ambitions | Posted 8/14/2007 9:52:58 AM | show profile suit vs. casual Thanks. I always feel comfortable in a suit-or at least my 3 quarter sleeve, black pin-striped, skirt suit.. but I may look for a blazer and a graphic tee or something like that. Oy, I wish some woman's mag would do a story on what to wear for interviews at various types of companies. Well congrats on getting the job. |
| Brena | Posted 8/14/2007 10:56:05 AM | show profile Thanks! I forgot to mention, the next job interview, the interviewer had on jeans and a buttoned, cotton shirt as well. I should have known better. Employers want to not only pick someone that has the skills to perform the job, but also someone who can seamlessly fit into their current program where people get along. I'm at home in jeans, a tee, or a tank. And I'm a "creative," so I'm at home there as well, although I don't think I'll wear a t-shirt to work because it's a supervisor position; I like to set a tone. But I might wear a t-shirt underneath a suit jacket with jeans and heels. |

It's def ok to show you have a bit of a creative edge. good luck! |
