| writesonwater | Posted 8/17/2007 3:45:15 PM | show profile Oh, dilbert-- snagged my entry. Here it is again: There are an abundance of threads by unemployed MB folks looking for support, etc. What about making a thread area (I can't remember what you call them!) just for Jobseekers Support Group? Just an idea... I wonder what anyone else thinks? |
| fake.it.til.you.make.it | Posted 8/19/2007 2:13:04 AM | show profile I like the idea, and I'm unemployed myself. I've always thought a chat room might be another way to share information or commiserate here that mb should consider. |
| writesonwater | Posted 8/19/2007 2:55:32 AM | show profile Thanks for the feedback, Fake. I guess one concern is that so many of the threads are about people who are stressed out about being unemployed -- would that thin out the media issues too much? Another concern MB might have would be people posting job openings there instead of in featured jobs. I agree with you -- I think jobseekers would benefit from having a place of their own. I'm not sure about chat rooms -- those things suck up time like nobody's business and also can be hard to monitor. Neat idea though. |
| pob | Posted 8/19/2007 1:26:16 PM | show profile I think it would separate the job seakers too much. The people with advice to give are looking in the Media and Beginner sections and replying when they think they can help someone seeking employment. If you take the people looking for a job and put them somewhere else, they'll be separate from the overall dialog on the site. I think it's better if we all hang out together. |
| Chamsah | Posted 8/23/2007 10:38:00 AM | show profile Separate I don't think it separates out job seekers if the section is one below the beginners, for example. If it were on another page, then I'd agree. No one is looking to post job leads. or whathave, you in the job seekers section. It can be made clear that it is a support or a chat forum and that job listings will be removed. Besides, if I know about a good opp for someone who is unemployed, I will email him/her about it. Why on earth would anyone publicly post it? I'm curious to see how many people will step forward and say, this is me, laid off and looking for longer than I ever expected. There is still a large stigma about being laid off -- not fired for performance but your position/magazine was eliminated. I've noticed that many people just keep to themselves and go about their merry way searching. Some of them find jobs immediately because they're very well connected. The rest of us? Well we are here and I think it would be great if we had some sort of community. Let's do it. MB, can you assist? |
| Jukester | Posted 8/29/2007 3:33:49 PM | show profile I like the idea. Also, I would love to talk one-on-one with a media professional about my resume and a job that might be appropriate for me. MB offers classes and workshops - how about making an employment consultant available? I would pay for that. |
| Chamsah | Posted 9/3/2007 7:33:40 PM | show profile Career counselor, anyone? Has anyone met with a career counselor? Has it helped? I am in the middle of a search... it's not going well. I posted here about a recommendation and didn't hear back from anyone. I spoke to someone who charges $200 an hour and did not offer packages. She said she "knew" publishing but I want someone who really KNOWS all abut publishing. She listened to my story and said I could benefit from 4 or 5 sessions. Lady, if I had $1,000, I wouldn't NEED a career counselor. At this point I think I have find someone if only how do this this long-term. |
| Metro Writer | Posted 10/5/2007 1:41:49 PM | show profile Career counselors and coaches are people who couldn't get jobs themselves, so they became entrepreneurs who prey on the vulnerable and defeated. Look for writers groups in your area so you can network. Look at meetup.com and google press clubs and public relations society chapters. You'll meet people who are working in your field. Don't go by the title alone and write it off if you think you won't meet the people you want to. For example, the Connecticut Press Club (www.ctpressclub.com) is comprised of working press, successful freelance writers, editors, authors, and PR people and you meet guest writers and editors from The New York Times, magazines, and book publishers. |
| Potluckcraft | Posted 10/11/2007 8:51:09 PM | show profile | email poster Just to weigh in on the original question?yes, I think it'd be swell to have a category for the poor unemployed souls who are seeking. It seems like they (we) crowd the other boards quite a bit anyway. -Heather |
