I'm trying to use more natural (no/minimal chemicals) skin/hair care products.

A cheap, natural, and pretty effective deodorant: baking soda mixed with a little cornstarch, dab on right after taking a shower. This seems to work better than the commercial natural deodorants I've tried from the store.

Skin moisturizer: a little dab of sunflower oil.

Anyone have any good suggestions for shampoos/conditioners? Organic shampoos/conditioners I'm sure are better than the cheap kind I buy (in terms of chemicals, etc.) but they're pretty expensive.

Check out Cal Orey's book on the wonders of olive oil -- seems it's due out soon. I love olive oil for any skin irritation. It cured my son's psoriasis.

I've heard people rave about coconut oil as a conditioner.

Egg whites on your face for a temporary pore tightener. Bananas mashed with honey for a facial mask. Beer applied to hair and rinsed with cold water makes it full and really shiny.

That's what I can think of off the top of my head. I'm sure you can come up with all sorts of stuff through a Web search.

Sugar Scrub
Here is a great sugar scrub. It smells like a sugar cookie and leaves your skin totally baby soft. You can smooth it on your legs while in the bath:

Olive Oil
White Sugar
Brown Sugar
Kosher Salt
Vanilla Extract

Try Carol's Daughter. It's not just for African Americans.

This may sound weird but try a refreshing toothpaste mask.

I grew up on the beach, in the sun and have brown spots on my face, so it made sense to take Arm and Hammer triple whitening toothpaste and spread it on my face for a period of time.....oh so nice. So I left it there and holy moly it feels amazing. Once you are ready to wipe it off, use it to exfoliate first and massage it into your skin gently.

Then rinse with warm water. It helped fade the spots on my skin and it feels better than any other facial product I have tried.

Shhhhh?do not tell toothpaste manufacturers or they will start charging 200$ per tube. ;-)

The Healing Powers of Olive Oil
www.calorey.com and www.amazon.com

Book is due out in a few months. Lots of natural beauty info as well as olive oil-based beauty products. I've used 'em. Warning: they're addictive!

I can attest to the amazing effects of olive oil on the skin. Cooking with it is of course the good start, but there are a ton of really wonderful olive oil based products you can get out there.
You can mix about a teaspoon size portion of it with your favorite lotion with a wire whisk and it will do wonders.

When I lived in N. Cal, there was this amazing guy in the town I lived in who made soap with olive oil bases and the scents were outstanding. I'll bet most places have one soapmaker that works w/ olive oil.

I was just at a farmer's market in CT and there was a soap maker there who had bars with a goat's milk base. Apparantly, he raises goats and creates a few different organic products with them. I couldn't resist a bar of apple cider soap. It's just as good as the olive oil!

I've been using Philip B. natural skin and hair products for about a year and really and truly love them. They have this Nordic Woods all over wash that can also be used as a shampoo that is so refreshing. And their Chai Latte shower gel smells delicious and leaves your skin soft but not oily.
His stuff is kind of expensive, though. I think Burt's Bees and those Avalon lavender Products are pretty good too.

A friend of mine who makes soaps has an easy recipe for linen spray for freshening up linens -- check out this one from Frugal Village, which sounds a lot like hers. She said the key is distiled water and, believe it or not, vodka.

Use this sprinkled on your sheets and towels in the linen closet or
on your pillow or sheets at night.
100 drops (5 ml) lavender oil
5 drops peppermint oil
1 1/2 fluid ounces (45 ml) vodka
(highest proof available) 20 ounces distilled or spring water
Blend the essential oils with the vodka in a small glass
bowl. Stir well to blend. Pour water into a large glass bottle. Add oil mixture to water.

also, check out this site for home-made fixes with peppermint, lavender and lemon oil:

I have a jar of coconut oil in the fridge (it melts above 78 degrees and I prefer it solid). I scoop a chunk into the bath and add a few drops of a favorite essential oil -- it's way cheaper than expensive bath products.
