Topic: advise re working at a small paper

I'm 24 (two years out of college: I taught English in Latin America for a year, now I'm doing clerical stuff for a law firm). I've decided (somewhat late) to pursue journalism. I'm looking to volunteer/get an internship 2 or 3 days a week at a local paper (I live in Jersey City, NJ). My question is, how exactly do I go about doing that? I have a few clips, but not much. Do I just call papers cold? Do I write them (I've found mailing addresses but few e-mails)? What exactly do I say? I'm really in a tight position here so ANY advise anybody could give (besides telling me not to do it!) would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance. |
