What is the strangest thing or event that has happened to you this month? Also, a few times while listening to an audiobook during my commute the reader would say a rather odd word and a car or truck would drive by at that exact moment with that word on its bumper or side.

1. What song always makes you feel good?
"As" by Stevie Wonder; "One Love" by Bob Marley; "Summertime" by DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince; the theme from "The Cosby Show."

2. What would people be surprised to find out about you?
I did not like "The English Patient." I totally agree with Elaine Bennis on this one.

3. Is there a period of your life you wish you could do over?
The whole year I was 15. I made my parents' life miserable, and I broke up with a high school boyfriend because my friends thought he was weird, even though I really liked him.

4. Have you ever been in true danger?
Yes. When I was seven years old and my brother was six, we were latchkey kids. A stranger knocked on the door when our mom wasn't home and disguised her voice as mom. The stranger asked us to open the door and I went to do it. My brother stopped me and grabbed a chair so that we could see through the peephole. Instead of mom, we saw some strange-looking lady -- probably a crackhead. I honestly think my brother saved us from something very bad. And he never lets me forget it.

5. What ethnicities make up your heritage?
Mostly islands throughout the Caribbean. A drop of Jewish on dad's side. People occasionally walk up to me and start speaking Spanish, but that only happens in New York.

6. What occupation could you never see yourself doing?
I could never work in politics. I'm too emotional and I'm sure I'd bitch-slap somebody and end up on trial.

7. What do you have a hard time admitting to yourself?
I have a hard time admitting my fears in general.

8. What is your most attractive body part?
My skin. It's like buttah! And I have cool hair. I'm going to age very well.

9. What don't you mind splurging on?
A really good meal. Comfortable shoes. A dress that makes my body look amazing. Gifts to people who are important to me.

10. Who is the most eccentric person you know?
My first roommate in New York. He's brilliant, but he's totally insane. He's traveled the world ten times over, speaks five or six languages, and I swear he could make friends with lawn furniture. He's just that friendly, warm, and charismatic. I think it's because he's European.

~Bonus Question~
What is the strangest thing or event that has happened to you this month?
In full view of passerbys, I saw a homeless woman lean up against a parked car and defecate on the street.

3. Is there a period of your life you wish you could do over?
All of junior high and most of high school.

4. Have you ever been in true danger?
A kidnapper attempted to abduct me when I was 5; nearly killed by a cab in Cancun; a pretty bad skiing accident in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
I know for a fact that angels do exist.

5. What ethnicities make up your heritage?
Irish, Scottish, Welsh and a smidge of Canadian, eh.

6. What occupation could you never see yourself doing?
Slaughterhouse worker or flight attendant.

8. What is your most attractive body part?
Eyes, lips and hands.

9. What don't you mind splurging on?
Handbags, dog toys and good coffee

10. Who is the most eccentric person you know?
My father. Among his many quirks is the fact that he won't use a towel to dry off after a shower. He must blow dry his entire body, head to toe. The process takes 20 minutes each morning. He burns out at least three dryers a year.
He also cuts his food into precise sized pieces--each bite is exactly the same size.
I love his weirdness.

~Bonus Question~
What is the strangest thing or event that has happened to you this month?
I have noticed that men have been hitting on me this month. Maybe I am putting out a vibe?
I also caught a random glimpse of myself in a store window and instead of recoiling in horror at my reflection, I actually thought that I looked rather nice.
keltoi2 Posted – 8/30/2007 11:25:22 AM | show profile
I knew you were a Celt, jbe! And as for the angels, I agree. They saved my butt at least 3 of my true danger times.

Aye Keltoi my laddie!
Erin Go Bragh.
Thank goodness for your angels.
~Slainte~

keltoi2 Posted – 8/30/2007 11:36:37 AM | show profile
Or as we daring Catholic school 6th graders would say, jbe, "Erin Go Braless!" By the way, the literal translation of Erin Go Bragh is not "Ireland Forever", but "Ireland Till Doomsday", which I think is even cooler. And yes, I owe my angels big-time. I think they're demanding OT.

And mad fingers, I love Last Train to Clarksville! I was very pleased to actually work that title into one of my articles in my college magazine.

caitlinkelly Posted – 8/30/2007 11:40:45 AM | show profile
1. Superstitious by Stevie Wonder; Jumpin' Jack Flash, Nina Simone singing My Baby Just Cares for Me.

2. A lot. My actress aunt got a full page obit in the Times of London this year. That I've met Queen Elizabeth and climbed the rigging to work 100 feet in the air on an Australian Tall Ship -- although not on the same day. That I'm in a major journo's memoirs for my reporting in 1984.

3. I wasted a lot of time and energy in my 30s on the wrong man. I'd like those years and my romantic optimism back.

4. On a safari in Africa when the guide left us alone in the dark surrounded by elephants and lions with no light sources beyond a fire and no guns. (no kidding.)

5. Irish, English, German, Canadian, American (I'm not sure which of those are ethnicities.)

6. Anything that demands wearing a suit and pantyhose, using "impact" as a verb and "mission-critical" as an adjective without irony, carting around one of those rolling briefcases, dashing for airplanes to places like Cleveland where you get grounded for days. Plus any work that daily involves witnessing others' emotional or physical pain firsthand; it's simply too draining if you care.

7. That I don't know when to just give up.

8. Eyes.

9. Anything that makes my home prettier and more welcoming. Setting a lovely table and serving a really good meal. Travel. Stuff wears out, gets stained and broken and obsolete -- but never will the memories and experiences from my travels.

10. I'm not impressed with, nor attracted to, eccentricity -- it's often used as a socially acceptable, semi-charming mask for substance abuse and selfishness.

Bonus

Yesterday I sat at an outdoor cafe in suburban NY and listened to a thin blond woman of about 40 discussing her upcoming wedding with her wedding planner. The bride had 3 major concerns: 1) that she gain enough weight to go from size 0-2 to a 4; 2) that her two tattoos be invisible and that 3) she wear not a tiara but a crown. Even the WP said, "Youre' kidding, right?" Apparently not.

I think my left bicep is a size 4.

5. What ethnicities make up your heritage? Irish, French and Romanian.

I got a huge spider bite, then I went to urgent care and the doctor tried to tell me it was ring worm. LOL! I was like..."Why do you say that?!", and the doc replied "I don't know, I think that's what ring worm looks like." LOL! Needless to say, a second opinion proved it was a spider bite :)

Prob the early years, between 11 and 16. I was the devil.

Yup, lost my brakes descending a mountain in Costa Rica. Then the car rental place left me on the side of the mountain to fend for myself.

Hands down, my mother.

6. What occupation could you never see yourself doing?
I grew up very poor and have the poor kid's certainty that I could do anything if I had to. I'm like an illegal immigrant that way.

7. What do you have a hard time admitting to yourself?
That I'm dark and pessimistic, because I really want to be light and optimistic. I try!

8. What is your most attractive body part?
I have lovely feet.

9. What don't you mind splurging on?
I'm not a splurger, but that doesn't mean I'm stingy or unwilling to spend money when my friends/family/pets need it or deserve it.

10. Who is the most eccentric person you know?
I know a lovely man who is cheerful and smart and fills his garden with flesh-eating plants. He wears odd clothes and doesn't worry about whether he's cool. Life fascinates him and I want to not care about what people think in the same way he doesn't.

~Bonus Question~
