| voracious reader | Posted 8/30/2007 7:47:07 PM | show profile 1. Memento 2. Dead Again 3. The Sting 4. Shattered 5. Reservoir Dogs (Because the first time you watch it, your eyes are closed!) |
| writesonwater | Posted 8/31/2007 8:56:52 AM | show profile These are all good suggestions. My husband added Ocean's 11. I also like Orson Welles' The Third Man for it. Dead Again is remarkably done. I want to see it again! |
| Gern Blansten | Posted 8/31/2007 9:29:01 AM | show profile .sgniweiv fo rebmun a htrow si otnemeM <<< What about Donnie Darko? That, too, is puzzle-rific. ...and, of course, Barton Fink! Gimme a complicated movie anytime! |
| chucho | Posted 8/31/2007 10:36:35 AM | show profile I second Donnie Darko and Barton Fink. I think Angel Heart has to be watched more than twice before it comes to you what is going on. OK, here's my take (spoiler alert! you really don't wanna read this if you haven't seen the film but intend to): Guy sells soul to devil, gets amnesia while putting his soul in another body of a returning WWII soldier (trying to live forever by jumping form body to body). Becomes a private detective in 1950s Harlem. Devil hires him to investigate himself so that he gets "cured" of his amnesia (discovers that he's the guy whose been killing all the people he's investigating) so devil can take his soul, because, as "Louis Cypher" says to "Johnny Angel" at the beginning of the film: "I don't like messy accounts". |
| writesonwater | Posted 8/31/2007 11:53:00 AM | show profile Definitely Angel Heart needs to be seen more than once to get it. Mickey Rourke was great in that. |
| recovering_jersey_girl | Posted 8/31/2007 12:58:56 PM | show profile 1. The Usual Suspects 2. Pulp Fiction 3. Sin City |
| zftcg | Posted 8/31/2007 1:21:38 PM | show profile The Usual Suspects (there's so much going on once you know the ending) Office Space (I swear to God this movie gets funnier every time I see it. Have you ever noticed that the piece of modern art in front of the office building is a square peg going into a round hole?) This Is Spinal Tap (most people don't get it the first time they watch it, but on repeated viewings the genius starts to sink in.) |
| keltoi2 | Posted 8/31/2007 1:38:17 PM | show profile The Sixth Sense. Lots of fun when you know what's going on. One example, every scene with a dead person in it has something red. Also, Bruce Willis' "non-interaction" with adults is deftly handled. |
| Iron Eagle | Posted 8/31/2007 1:57:38 PM | show profile 1. Children of God 2. Master and Commander 3. Too Live 4. Amelie 5. The Krays |
| rulebook | Posted 8/31/2007 2:38:24 PM | show profile Big Lebowski |
| dribbledrive1 | Posted 8/31/2007 4:15:06 PM | show profile I guess some would say the Sixth Sense. But I personally disagree with this. The joy of many of these films are the plot surprises. I supposed some people might find intellectual pleasure in watching the films and deconstructing how they were put together. I tend not to watch films more than once. But the films I enjoy multiple viewings of tend to have a greater emphasis on character than plot surprises, like Casablanca. --1. Memento 2. Dead Again 3. The Sting 4. Shattered 5. Reservoir Dogs (Because the first time you watch it, your eyes are closed!)-- |
| Bleak Spouse | Posted 8/31/2007 5:19:53 PM | show profile ah, I've seen Barton Fink and Raging Bull both over 100 times each and I'm still getting new things out of them. Fargo is another. Mystery Train. Ah....number 5: how about Jaws. |
| keltoi | Posted 9/1/2007 12:13:51 AM | show profile Drib, you're right that the key to The Sixth Sense is the plot surprises. I would be one who did the rewatching to deconstruct. |
