Topic: What To Do About Clips in Subsequent Pitches?

| makingtracks | Posted 8/31/2007 11:49:12 AM | show profile I do believe that pitch, pitch, pitch (with some judicious study of the marketplace) is what finally buys us freelancers a square meal, but I have been troubled by one question I can't seem to get answered. I hope by asking it here, that the 20th time will prove the charm! Scenario: I pitch to a mag. They send me back a note saying "we have something like this already" BUT it is the sort of piece that fits our pub and we'd like you to send us any other ideas you have." Fine. So, ten days later, I send another pitch. Do I refer to their request for more ideas? Do I mention they have my clips already? If my first two ideas don;t make it, and I send them another pitch a month later, surely they've forgotten me--do I repeat my bio and send basically the same clips I sent before? (I don;t always have a newer clip.) It seems awkward to send the same clips to the same people three times in four months. Anyone who can give me some feedback on this is my patron saint for life. |

If they're interested in your subsequent ideas but iffy about your ability and can't find the clips you already sent, they'll ask. But most likely in that timeframe they'll remember you, especially if you refer to your previous correspondence with a, "I emailed you the story idea about (blank), here are some other ideas I think you'll like / that are perfect for your pub." I would definitely recommend including a sentence like that - remind them that they liked your idea, even if they didn't go with it. I find that a lot of pubs don't especially like receiving clips anyway. I suspect eds don't have time reviewing past works and rely mostly on what you've said you've done, and the strength of your pitch. |
