I was astounded that after Tom Delay gave a speech that included this astoundingly idiotic form of reasoning, he was applauded by a hall full of college-aged Republicans:

"If you don't beleive that abortion affects you, I contend that it affects you in immigration. If we had those 30 million children that have been killed over the last 30 years, we wouldn't need the illegal immigrants to fill the jobs that they are doing. Think about it."

Oh, Jesus.

Is Tom DeLay implying there's a labor shortage in the United States?

Is this how Americans rationalize?

Is this what we've become, a bunch of partisan fools applauding anything these jackasses spew?

"Yes, well, that is why America is a doomed empire. You can see it so clearly in the Putin-Bush relationship. On the one side you have Putin, a self-made criminal genius, a guy who's had to learn to see every angle before they even happen in order to keep from getting shot on his way to the top. On the other side you have Bush, a total zero who fucked up everything he ever tried and ended up in the White House anyway. These other foreign leaders in the third world, the Putins and Musharrafs and the like, they're playing every hand with their own money. They understand the immediate physical consequences of failure. It has been a long time -- not since World War II, anyway -- since America has needed to be smart enough to protect itself from real harm. It has forgotten how to save its bullets for the real fights. And so it stumbles into this place and that, shooting out windows and randomly wrecking shit like teenagers playing mailbox baseball. Sooner or later that is going to come back and really bite us."

- Matt Taibbi

(Sounds OT, dunnit? But actually I thin this is all inter-related. The way Americans think. If they're willing to applaud a man who makes a false argument: that abortion has caused a labor shortage that makes America dependent on immigrant labor, then WTF else are Americans willing to applaud, beleive, support and vote for?)

That's why Tom Delay is in a hillbilly asylum.

Yes, another sad example of distorted, twisted American think. I think even most Republicans can see that people like Delay are just playing them, using them.

Ugo, all politicians play their constituents. But what bothers me is how false the reasoning of DeLay's argument was and how complacent the audience was to the speech. Nobody even questioned the premise: that there's a shortage of labor created by abortion that makes us dependent on immigrant labor. If we don't expect politicians to craft arguments that aren't so overtly stupid and false then we deserve the leaders we have. DeLay wasn't some freshman lawmaker: he was a major player for years, and he's in his hillbilly asylum for some pretty light stuff that Democrats are just as likely to be guilty of: taking free trips, right? That's basically it.

Chucho, maybe the audience remained silent because it's impossible to reason with an unbalanced person who says preposterous things.
