1. What brands or products do you swear by?
Dove deodorant and the Got2B hair styling products- much cheaper than the salon products, and they work better for my hair type. Also, no cranberry juice tastes as good as Ocean Spray, and Brown Cow nonfat vanilla yogurt is the BEST. I can't find a better yogurt than that...it's so creamy.

2. Have you ever had a panic attack?
I've come close, but not ever a full-blown one.

3. What soothes you?
Wine, bubble baths, listening to jazz music, Dove milk chocolate, hugs from my husband and cuddling, and crossing items off my never-ending to-do list. Oh, and strangely enough, organizing stuff at home makes me happy and calm. I think it's because my brain is so cluttered and random that I seek order in my physical surroundings. The yin to my brain's yang.

4. What was the most foolish thing you did this past August?
Hmm...nothing?

5. What was an absolute turning point in your life?
After my dad passed away a few years ago, I went on a self-destructive crazy-acting binge. I finally realized what I was doing to myself and I woke up and started to snap out of it. Meeting my now husband and getting his unconditional love and support helped snap me out of that phase.

6. What are some of your pet peeves?
People who ask really dumb questions, people who cut in line, etc- basically people who think their time is worth more than anyone else's, popping gum, annoying little background noises people make like pen clicking, desk rapping, etc. ANd when people tell loooooong drawn-out stories that could have been told in 1/10 of the time.

7. When was the last time you had a good cry?
A few weeks ago during my week from hell.

8. Who is the most annoying person you know?
A coworker...

9. What sounds make you cringe?
styrofoam squeaking!! It's my version of nails on a chalkboard- makes me shiver every time.

10. Have you ever experienced something that you just can't explain?
Yes- I woke up in the middle of the night after having a very disturbing dream. When I woke up, I felt like something was pressing HARD down on my chest, and I couldn't breathe. And I felt really, really cold. It was frightening.

~Bonus Question~

What question(s) do you wish you had the courage to ask but don't because it might thought of as rude or inappropriate?

Hmm...nothing I can think of!

Hey Mag Girl

"I woke up in the middle of the night after having a very disturbing dream. When I woke up, I felt like something was pressing HARD down on my chest, and I couldn't breathe. And I felt really, really cold. It was frightening."

I experienced this a couple times myself back in college. For years I thought it was an alien encounter but recently I found out it was a fairly normal condition called Sleep Paralysis. I felt huge weights pushing down on my entire body as strange lights circled the room. Actually I was a bit disappointed that it wasn't an alien encounter. Never experienced it since.

1. What brands or products do you swear by?
Anything with Tea Tree oil in it for the face, and the Jason line of natural products...i have sensitive skin sometimes

2. Have you ever had a panic attack?
Nope, not since high school. And to think I thought my troubles were too much to handle back then...wow.

3. What soothes you?
Reading a great book, getting a massage or a facial, having someone brush my hair, and the sound of running water.

4. What was the most foolish thing you did this past August?
Well...I went out of town for a few days and didn't forward my work phone to my cell phone, which I did on purpose but I made sure to check my voicemail in case a potential client called. And then of course I forgot to check it and when I got back sure enough, there was a client who I would've loved to work with, who needed something on a quick turnaround. I called back but we kept missing each other so I'm sure they don't want to work with me again, probably think I'm too hard to get a hold of, which I'm not,it was just really bad luck.

5. What was an absolute turning point in your life?
When I realized I wanted to be a writer. By my second year in college I still thought I would go into advertising or architecture even though I'd been writing all my life. It was one of those moments when you choose something that'll make you happy instead of something that'll let you get by.

6. What are some of your pet peeves?
Dishes that still come out wet from the dishwasher. People who call me Spanish just because I speak the language.

7. When was the last time you had a good cry? On my birthday a few months ago. I really have no idea why.

8. Who is the most annoying person you know? My cousin's ex. Dude made me cringe just by saying hello to me, and I'm really not the kind of person who makes a judgment on first impression.

9. What sounds make you cringe? Parrots.

10. Have you ever experienced something that you just can't explain? You know that sleep/awake state when you want to wake up but you're paralyzed, and you can't scream?

~Bonus Question~

What question(s) do you wish you had the courage to ask but don't because it might thought of as rude or inappropriate? I'd love to ask one of my friends why she's still with her boyfriend.

1. Almay moisturizer with SPF 15, cheap and effective; St. Ives apricot scrub; H2O pumice scrub. Farrow & Ball paint.

2. Yes. Turns out other family members have them too.

3. The smell of pine trees, especially sun-dried pine needles. The sound of halyards clanging against sailboat masts. The sound of water lapping on rocks. The dripping sound of water trailing off your paddle as you canoe. Waking up in Paris and Mexico, places full of happy memories. On a really good day, church. Whiling hours away with a dear friend.

4. Buying Farrow & Ball paint, two cans of which would pay for a decent pair of shoes or a very good meal. Deciding to paint a whole room after that.

5. Attending the funeral of a friend my age, of cancer, in January 2006. It has changed my outlook on every level since then.

6. Leafblowers and wood chippers shrieking and whining all freaking day in a normally quiet town. Snobs who behave as though not having whatever they have, (often obtained through connections or wealth you'll never have access to), means you're worth less than they are as a human being. Nagging. Self-righteousness. People who turn a blind eye to others' misery and/or humiliation. Entitlement. A total inability to turn off the irony/hip button.

7. Recently, being told my stepmom's prognosis is much worse then we had hoped.

8. People who make crappy decisions that make them miserable but want me to tell them these choices are, in fact, fab. This is not uncommon, so hard to pick one person who does it.

9. People screaming abuse at one another.

10. This weekend a hawk landed on my terrace railing about eight feet from me and stared deep into my eyes for five minutes. It was mindboggling. If I did not have photos my fiance snapped of it, I would not believe it happened.

BQ:

Why is it persistently OK in the journalism business to ask jobsearchers, esp. freelancers who may have to put off other paid work, to spend many hours of hard work, offering up multiple free ideas and sources, as a test? Pay something for the time and no one would mind. But who does?

Why do so many writers, grabbing terrible rates and contracts and conditions, behave like editors and publishers are doing us a HUGE favor when they buy and use our work? Read the rate card for one of the fancy magazines you write for -- $65k for a full-page ad -- and see the revenue our talent helps reap.

2. All the time. It comes with living in New York.

5. There have been several--moving from Japan to the US when I was 10; going to college on an academic scholarship; moving to New York.

6. People who crack their joints (ugh), people with bad breath, people with BO (I'm talking about the never-bathes kind, not the "I just went to the gym" kind).

7. A few days ago.

8. My ex roommate.

9. Joint-cracking.

10. Not really...

Bonus: Oh, there are many...

1. What brands or products do you swear by?
Paul Mitchell hairstyling products. Tazo Zen tea. Apple computer!

2. Have you ever had a panic attack? Yes. When I was about 8 or 10 my mother got very sick and I thought she was going to die. I couldn't leave her to go to camp because I was afraid she'd die while I was gone. The further I got from the house, the more panicky I would get. (I actually thought I was ill.) Also, when I signed my first lease in NY on a teeny tiny apt. and was like what the fuck have I done? Couldn't eat for a week.

3. What soothes you? Chocolate. My dog. My husband. Food. Television. Movies. Music. Meditation. Yoga. But mostly, antidepressants!

4. What was the most foolish thing you did this past August? Spent money I knew we didn't have. I bought a $30 bottle of jam from welovejam.com. WTF?

5. What was an absolute turning point in your life? I keep having them. Keep recommitting to writing only to be tossed away by life again. That day jobs are not the path to happiness.

6. What are some of your pet peeves? People who have dumb loud conversations on the subway. Having to go to work. When people bring children or babies to adult movies. These two moron women brought six 6-year-olds to Grizzly Man!!!

7. When was the last time you had a good cry? Haven't cried since I started taking antidepressants. Thought I might cry while watching A Mighty Heart, but it just wouldn't come. So, cripes, I don't know. Used to cry every time I went to therapy.

8. Who is the most annoying person you know? My former supervisor was a real Chatty McChatkins who had about three stupid boring stories that she told over and over and at length... My last office mate, who described everything as, "Smells like ass." And instead of saying, "Later," she would say, "Lates."

9. What sounds make you cringe? When the subway turns and screeches. Ooh. Hate that.

10. Have you ever experienced something that you just can't explain? I'm 40 years old and I'm still afraid of the dark. If I see a scary movie, I can't go to the bathroom alone in the middle of the night for months afterward. And, after my dog died, I swear I saw his face in the clouds--at night no less (with the moon illuminating it from behind). (FYI: I'm a total atheist.)

~Bonus Question~

What question(s) do you wish you had the courage to ask but don't because it might thought of as rude or inappropriate? How much money do you make? How much money do you have? How much debt do you have? How can you stand your life?

Diet Coke, Levis, Entenmann's chocolate chip cookies, Lean Pockets, Sony electronics.

Calming music, watching the birds at my feeder, a walk in the woods, relaxing with my wife, looking out at my backyard.

4. What was the most foolish thing you did this past August?
I did a maneuver in traffic one day on the way to work which in hindsight was really stupid (a little bit of road rage with a left lane loser), but fortunately, no harm came of it.

5. What was an absolute turning point in your life?
A number of them, but a few key ones: getting into college, not getting expelled from college, landing various jobs, getting laid off from my last one, marrying my wife.

6. What are some of your pet peeves?
People hogging the left lane (see above), rude people in general, people who don't do their jobs correctly, attitude.

7. When was the last time you had a good cry?
Last time I cried at all was August 1, 1996, when my brother Brendan died of cancer. There was nothing "good" about it.

8. Who is the most annoying person you know?
Hmmm. Different categories of annoying, so tough call.

9. What sounds make you cringe?
Nails on blackboard of course, but teeth on a popsicle stick, dentist drill, saw on sheet metal, hi-pitched tantrums of small children.

10. Have you ever experienced something that you just can't explain?
Have had a number of experiences with ghosts in various places, a demon in Greece, and a few guardian angel situations in London and Provence.

~Bonus Question~

What question(s) do you wish you had the courage to ask but don't because it might thought of as rude or inappropriate?
If I don't ask something because it would be rude or inappropriate, then it's not a lack of courage but common courtesy that keeps me from asking.

1. What brands or products do you swear by?
Palmolive Liquid. "Madge was right"

2. Have you ever had a panic attack? "Yes. During a severe health crisis in my family, I could not get on a subway one morning and head to work. I eventually walked the 40 blocks and that cleared my head. But, the thought of being underground, squashed among so many other commuters, sent my heart racing and I felt like I could not breathe.

3. What soothes you? The sound of my husband's voice -- in person or over the phone.

4. What was the most foolish thing you did this past August? Did not send a resume out to a company that was hiring PR people. A friend sent me the job posting because I always say I am tired of free-lancing. I procrastinated and never sent the resume. Guess I still could, but....

5. What was an absolute turning point in your life?
When my first article was published by a major newspaper. I suddenly believed, "Hey, I can do this and get paid!"

6. What are some of your pet peeves? Rude people. Negative people. Cheap people. People who expect something for nothing. People who don't reciprocate.

7. When was the last time you had a good cry? After my mom died last year. I've shed many a tear since that dreadful day, but the major crying jag was a few days after the funeral. Since then, I have wanted to have a major tear festival, but the tears only lightly fall.

8. Who is the most annoying person you know? Mmmm. I can't think of one most annoying person. Can it be someone on TV? I really find Rick Sanchez on CNN annoying. The way he finishes sentences for the people he is interviewing. "hut up, Rick. Please, shut up!"

9. What sounds make you cringe? Nails on a blackboard.

10. Have you ever experienced something that you just can't explain? Yes. I have had several premonitions and each came true. I cannot say why I thought something was going to happen and it did. This always happens out of the blue.

~Bonus Question~

What question(s) do you wish you had the courage to ask but don't because it might thought of as rude or inappropriate? I'm afraid to post here. I can just imagine the flames that would be generated on the board.

Thanks, Janet, for the fun!

Actually, jbe, it's a very wild (and very true) story which I would like to share, but since I plan on using it some day, I don't wish to divulge to a website full of writers. Not that I don't implicitly trust each and every poster here, of course--it's those silent readers I'm suspicious of. ;-)

1. What brands or products do you swear by?
Method, Clorox Wipes, Michael Stars tops, Crest White Strips, Point Reyes Blue Cheese and Ketel One Vodka, Philip B Bath products, and Nature's Miracle

2. Have you ever had a panic attack? Yes, a few times while driving. I had a horrible car accident as a teenager and I am always afraid the car alongside is going to drift right into me.

3. What soothes you? Good wine, the sound of waves crashing on the beach, the sound of a running stream, the smell of burning scented candles, fog horns, a good massage, dining out and being treated like gold by the staff, hugs from my little boys, the smell of pine trees on a cold day after a rain, large, cold glasses of water, lemonade or iced tea on a hot day and rich hot cocoa or a good herbal tea on a cold one.

4. What was the most foolish thing you did this past August? Staying with my sister for a week in So. Cal.

5. What was an absolute turning point in your life?

When I got pregnant with my first child. I was still in college and in my early 20's, and rather than panicking over what to do, I just told myself to carry on. Had the baby, graduated from school, did the internship and worked. I was a tremendously self absorbed person before the baby, so I really feel like there was some divine intervention that caused me to get it together.

6. What are some of your pet peeves?
I get annoyed really easily, so there are lots. Here's just a few:
people who let children act like monsters in public, line cutters, tailgaters, the people who post all the insulting, immature bullshit in the television section of MB, the dumb dogs next door who bark EVERY time we are in our yard, apathetic servers, the annoying, uptight, self absorbed materialistic assholes that live in my new town, packaging for things that make it nearly impossible to open stuff without a machete.

7. When was the last time you had a good cry? earlier in the month when I realized I really hate where I live.

8. Who is the most annoying person you know? Do I have to name just one? There are so many in my neck of the weeds.......

9. What sounds make you cringe? Babies screaming, anything really loud and unexpected. It actually pisses me off when I get startled.

10. Have you ever experienced something that you just can't explain? Waking up from a deep sleep within moments of the time my father passed away

~Bonus Question~

What question(s) do you wish you had the courage to ask but don't because it might thought of as rude or inappropriate? I don't have many scruples when it comes to questions. I just haul off an ask.
Janetblueyes Posted – 9/6/2007 1:20:32 PM | show profile
1. What brands or products do you swear by?
Kozy Shack rice pudding; Pier 1 aromatherapy diffusers; L'Oreal Lash Out mascara; most L.L. Bean products; Cetaphil facial cleanser; Weight Watchers Smart Ones frozen dinners; Oral B toothbrushes; Bookbinders brand of soups; Biore pore strips; America's Choice brand of marinara sauce; everything Entenmann's makes.

2. Have you ever had a panic attack?
I was diagnosed with a panic/anxiety disorder back in my teens. After a few bad years, they went away, only to resurface in my 30s. For the most part they are under control, but occasionally I go into full blown panic for no reason. They run in my family, as both my parents suffer from them.
It is a horrible condition, but one that can be manged.

3. What soothes you?
Having my hands massaged; the smell of Patchouli; a nap; the smell of my two dogs after they have swim in the ocean; windy days; the scent of pine needles; gazing at mountains; having a good poop.

4. What was the most foolish thing you did this past August?
Walking around naked in front of plate glass windows at night so all my neighbors could see, if they cared to have a peek. I was feeling rebellious and I had just shaved...

5. What was an absolute turning point in your life?
Breaking up with my biker boyfriend when I was 19 to go to college.

6. What are some of your pet peeves?
People who call the number zero the letter "O." Zero is a number, not a letter. For some reason this makes me nuts. I also hate piles of junk mail and paper lying around. If it is crap, throw it out.

7. When was the last time you had a good cry?
About one month ago, which is quite a long time for me. Usually I let loose at least once a week.

8. Who is the most annoying person you know?
I don't know her but Rachael Ray makes me wince, as does Nancy Grace. I also think Larry King is an absolute tool.

9. What sounds make you cringe?
The sound of a metal spoon scraping a metal bowl. Also the sound of knuckles or joints cracking.

10. Have you ever experienced something that you just can't explain?
Being very psychic or "intuitive"as I prefer to call it, there are so many things that have happened to me that I've given up trying to explain them. I accept them as gifts from beyond/above and leave it at that.
One of the more striking incidents happend as I was stepping of a curb in Cancun, unaware that a speeding taxi was feet away from hitting me. Something unseen grabbed the collar of my shirt from behind and yanked me back on the curb. Many blessings indeed.

~Bonus Question~

What question(s) do you wish you had the courage to ask but don't because it might thought of as rude or inappropriate?
I'm kind of curious about how much money people make. I also want to ask women with obvious plastic surgery who did their work and I wonder how often people get constipated. Does that make me weird? Or am I Foto's dream girl?

OK, jbe, that's weird. Your Cancun experience? I had the exact same in London back in 1986. It was my first time in the city, I was stepping off a curb looking the WRONG way for traffic, a hand clamped on my shoulder and yanked me back 2 seconds before a doubledecker bus blew by me from the other direction, missing my nose by maybe 3 inches. I turned around to thank my samaritan, and there was no one around. At all.

Doodoodoodoo doodoodoodoo.

Earlier this week. I blame PMS, though, since I don't even remember when the time before that was.

Sad to say, my Nana...she's one of those people who answers, "How are you?" with a litany of aches and pains, and she HAS to be the center of every conversation.

Keltoi-
That is so weird. I also turned around to thank the person who yanked me back to the curb and there was absolutely no one there.

As I said last week, I am a true believer in angels/guardians.

When I was in Ireland a few months ago, I had such an overwhelming feeling of being watched and protected. I think Ireland is one of the most spiritual and magical places on earth. The air is ripe with ancient mystery and wisdom.

Perhaps because my ancestors came from the Isle, they were happy to see one of the clan back. The city of Cobh was overwhelming for me, as that is where me peeps left from. I had goosebumps the entire time I was in that port city.

I've gotten way off topic here but I love these kinds of things.

1. What brands or products do you swear by? Clarks shoes, anything sold by footsmart; Kitchenaid appliances; Moleskine journals;

2. Have you ever had a panic attack? Yes. It was at a time of high stress and I felt like I couldn't breathe -- it felt like asthma, although I've never had asthma -- it could have been, in fact.

3. What soothes you? Sound of rain on the roof or wind and rain in trees, waves crashing on beach and foghorn. Those sounds together lulled me to sleep on many occasions in my growing up years. Clean crisp cotton sheets. Glass. multiple shades of blue all together. Alison Krauss voice. Manicures. Foot massage. Having someone wash my hair with good-smelling shampoo. Porch swings. Sight, sound of water.

4. What was the most foolish thing you did this past August?

5. What was an absolute turning point in your life? Going to boarding school. Meeting my husband. Having each of my kids, very pivotal in their own way. Realizing I could write, that I should write. Begging the editor of the local daily to believe in me enough to give me a job when I'd never worked in print. Leaving full-time employment, realizing I could support myself as a freelance writer.

6. What are some of your pet peeves? People who bully their kids. People who hit their kids (I'm not talking about a spank on the butt to avert future danger.) Snobs. Teachers who don't like kids or their jobs. Hot days.

7. When was the last time you had a good cry? Four months ago.

8. Who is the most annoying person you know? I've got a list ;) I find George Bush annoying.

9. What sounds make you cringe? People who yell at their kids in ugly, bully voices.

10. Have you ever experienced something that you just can't explain? Yes. Knowing for sure about things I had no particular reason to know about, no evidence. While being given cortizone to work my unborn preemie's lungs in preparation for his birth, I had a sort of hallucination (I'd been in hospital a long, long time) that was quite nice -- a real rush of absolute self-esteem. Literal delusions of grandeur. Never happened before or since, which is no doubt for the best ;)

~Bonus Question~

What question(s) do you wish you had the courage to ask but don't because it might thought of as rude or inappropriate? I do my best to stay away from rude or inappropriate behavior. If for an interview I have to ask something that's delicate or could be misconstrued, I frame it up very kindly and politely as possible. I've learned a professional, gracious and concerned demeanor that helps a great deal with difficult things.

Also, I save the tougher questions for last -- to warm the person up, and just in case that ends the interview then and there ...

However, when interviewing criminals, I demonstrated a knack for getting answers out of them and some questions were quite personal. I didn't feel like the usual taboos applied when talking to rapists and murderers. I'm sorry, ALLEGED rapists and murderers ..

1. What brands or products do you swear by?
High-end Bose headphones. They keep breaking but Bose keeps replacing them for free.

2. Have you ever had a panic attack?
Yeah

3. What soothes you?
Reading an insightful thought. Thomas Merton has a lot of them, so does Dostoyevsky.

4. What was the most foolish thing you did this past August?
Sent a shit-o-gram to my brother.

5. What was an absolute turning point in your life?
When my ex-girlfriend married a guy with baggy pants and a wallet chain.

6. What are some of your pet peeves?
Ah, just about everything annoys me.

7. When was the last time you had a good cry?
I've never cried as an adult. So maybe 1984?

8. Who is the most annoying person you know?
I stay away from annoying people so I know none.

9. What sounds make you cringe?
Insincere, obnoxious assholes yammering on their cell phones.

10. Have you ever experienced something that you just can't explain?
Yes. I can't explain how Americans accept the lies that are shoved down our throats by the government, and that we do absolutely nothing about it.

JBE, was in Ireland for the 4th time back in 2005 on my honeymoon and I was expecting the vibes and weirdnesses, but nothing happened along those lines. Which was fine by me.
