Topic: does anyone go back to staff after freelancing?

| lo17 | Posted 9/7/2007 10:57:34 AM | show profile i have been full time freelance for 2 years now (staff for 3 years before that) and i was wondering if it's possible or even makes sense to go back to being on staff. i make a very good hourly rate now and when i apply and interview for staff positions i always price myself out of the running by asking for what i am currently making. should i just continue to freelance and make a decent paycheck or should i take a pay cut? i really loved being on staff since i contributed more to the product and was much more respected and needed and i felt more secure. anyone else in this boat? |
| dribbledrive1 | Posted 9/7/2007 11:14:05 AM | show profile Personally, I don't think freelancing or being on staff is inherently better or worse. Each has their pros and cons. Only you can determine what is better for you. When pricing yourself, are you also considering that as a freelancer you pay more taxes and don't receive benefits? |
| lo17 | Posted 9/7/2007 11:19:02 AM | show profile i actually do get insurance through a third party for a good rate and when i figure my current salary i only figure 48 weeks a year since i take out vacation time and holidays. i am being taxed like an employee not as a freelancer, so that is the same as well. right? am i missing something? |
| catlondon | Posted 9/7/2007 4:32:00 PM | show profile How can you be taxed like an employee when you freelance? Who ponies up the rest of your FICA, Social Security, etc? |
| lo17 | Posted 9/7/2007 5:13:42 PM | show profile i think it's career blazers, the third party staffing agency. i am taxed an awful lot, but i filled out a W-4 and tried to deduct freelance expenses last year, but my accountant said i couldn't since i'm not technically freelance since i'm full-time... |
| writesonwater | Posted 9/8/2007 5:07:51 AM | show profile I am currently mulling a couple different options. I'm just not sure about getting into a staff position since in the two years I've freelanced I've brought my earnings up to staff level (just started to snowball within the last few months -- I consider it gaining critical mass.) At this point there's just one position I'd be interested in doing full-time, and I'm in the running for it. My husband, who used to freak out about me not making as much as I used to, now doubts whether going back into a workplace is in my best interest. There are things I miss about it -- including the steady check and interaction with more people. |
