I'm a student with a background in print journalism (and marketing), but new to public relations. I'm volunteering at a campus club to provide PR support for the experience and I'm writing my first news release article for the campus newspapers. I'm stuck on whether or not I should put a byline.

The article is written like an event article that a journalist would write, but I'm afraid without some sort of byline, it would look like a "press release." It is, I know, but what is the rule?

Over the coming months, I will write several press releases, both completed articles and pitches to the editor to mix it up.

A press release is not an "article." On a press release there isn't a byline. You would put contact information in the upper left hand corner of the release. This tells the journalist who to contact should they want more information. It should look like this:

Contact:
Jane Doe
Public Relations Specialist
555-555-5555
name@email.com

For Immediate Release

Headline
(subhead)

City, State, Date -- Body of release....

Thanks for the information.

Just for background, I visited both campus newspapers, one of which I wrote for last semester, and the editor-in-chiefs didn't mind if I wrote the full article or listed the information in "5'W's" format. The day of the actual events, the editors will send over reporters to cover it.

I guess what I'm writing is an announcement, with a little promotion about the club.

Thanks again!
