Hey all, I have been working full time as a freelance writer for the past year and a half and realize it's about time I create my own Web page. I would be grateful if anyone could recommend any Web designers/Web hosts they like and who are not too expensive. Any general advice about creating a Web site would also be appreciated. Thank you!

I use yahoo small business and had my brother design my very basic site using Frontpage. Yahoo is pretty cheap.

Yep, Yahoo Small Business is very affordable, and they have a way for you to design a page right online. Go to Yahoo, they should have a tour you can take.

Of course, you can also set up a blog for free at blogspot. It all depends on what you want to do with a web page.

Howdy there! Just chiming in, I used Microsoft Frontpage to design my very first website, which was nice and easy to use. However, I had my hubby design an updated page for my so it would look prettier. I feel squeamish about advertising from here (and I don't know his rates anyways, as I pay him with love), but let me know if you want to check out his site or anything.

As far as domain name purchasing and web hosting, I usually go through godaddy.com, and if you're looking to do a blog as well, I've heard nothing but good things about WordPress (I'm thinking of eventually moving my professional blog onto there; at the moment, it's hosted on LJ, but that's not really all that professional...).

iWeb?
Does anyone have an opinion on iWeb? A friend of mine used it to design his site and he said it was really user friendly. Only problem: if you were viewing at it using a PC, the site was slow and didn't work well. If you were on a mac, everything was great!

I need to design my own site and quite frankly I am terrified. I am a writer, not a designer but the times they are a changing and I know that doesn't matter when it comes to jobs anymore. Should I do it from a PC? Does it matter?

blogs
In regard to the post recommending Yahoo! Small Business that also mentioned blogs, I thought I'd point out that Yahoo! also gives you blog options that you can integrate directly with your Web site. IOW, you don't have to host it via Blogger. WordPress is a little more complicated to learn, but more powerful, and they also give you Moveable Type and another that was just added.

The blog integration is free with all Yahoo! Web hosting plans.

Many thanks to all for your advice. I will check out both Yahoo Small Business and Frontpage. Thanks again!
