| JeanMarie | Posted 9/15/2007 5:23:59 PM | show profile | email poster How does MB maintain a position of professionalism and respect in the media community when it allows demeaning and degrading posts to thrive and spiral out of control? http://www.mediabistro.com/bbs/cache/t35127_1.asp What am I missing? What is the value of this sort of exchange in a 'professional' community? |
| WordyBird | Posted 9/16/2007 12:28:08 AM | show profile I'm beginning to wonder about that, too. I think it's time for some mods to step in and clean this whole entire forum up. |
| mb_greg | Posted 9/19/2007 12:31:42 PM | show profile | email poster I'll let others debate mediabistro.com's position of professionalism, but as for our forums, I'll just say that we're doing the best we can to keep things clean. For now, that means going through manually and deleting offensive posts and threads, which we've become much more aggressive about policing. Going forward, we're looking to upgrade the forum software so that we'll more easily be able to catch spam before it even gets posted, ban/suspend users and close topics that have veered off course. In the meantime, the best way to help keep things clean is to let us know via email (or yes, posts like this one) if you find something that's offensive, violates our Terms of Service, or otherwise leads to an unpleasant experience on the site. ------ Greg Membership Director mediabistro.com |
| WordyBird | Posted 9/22/2007 11:39:54 AM | show profile Sounds good, Greg. It's a fairly big site. Unfortunately, the larger the site, the more undesirable elements it will attract, from spammers to members who just can't manage to be civil to others. I hope the TOS stops short of censorship--but just barely. I, for one, have found the attitude and tone of several of the members here to be abrasive on a generous day, but outright harassing and abusive on most. Not necessarily toward me, but in general. It makes the site look bad, and quite frankly, it's a turn off. |
| catlondon | Posted 9/22/2007 2:46:01 PM | show profile I have to admit that while I enjoy a lot of the arguing that goes on on these boards (it's always good to have to defend one's position) some of the messages that appear here are violent and frightening and I'm considering whether it's worth my membership money to subsidize online hate. This the first "professional" board where I've run into this, frankly. And everyone can scream all they want about freedom of speech. I'm not talking about freedom of speech, I'm talking about pure American capitalism and about whether or not my consumer dollars are best served on a site whose discussion threads are allowed to dissolve into vitriolic, hated filled posts. |
| catlondon | Posted 9/22/2007 3:02:02 PM | show profile mb_greg: This is from a post from Newzaroo from this month. >>Apparently, she/he/it has googled some liberal nut-case who also identifies himself as Newsaroo who watched his sister molested as a child and now reaches out to pamper other whimpering sex abuse victims. (I googled Newsaroo too) That Newsaroo, apparently named Ron Tebo, wants to cradle the world and cuddle its woes. He ain't me. I don't change crappy diapers and would have advised my sister to relax and enjoy the ride. (you can't rape the willing)<< Advise a child to relax and enjoy the ride??? My membership dues are subsidizing this kind of hate-filled and offensive posts--it's not worth it to me to re-up my subscription if this is what I, and others, are subjected to and perhaps there are more MBers who feel the same way. I'm not talking about freedom of speech here, just pure American capitalism. I belong to other professional boards where this would not be tolerated. |
| lcobb | Posted 9/22/2007 8:59:05 PM | show profile | email poster professonal journalists as teachers Can news reporters, tv announcers, copy editors, producers become college professors and still maintain respect in the media community. Are these journalists capable of teaching? |
| Newzaroo | Posted 9/24/2007 9:03:23 AM | show profile So Sorry, Smartie-pants... Not all of us are interested in reading or writing humorless, meaningless and burdensome blah, blah, blah. If you prefer to engage in bankrupt esoteric discourse, enroll in a class at Columbia University, NYC. I hear they've got a murderous terrorist as their guest of honor. ___ Note to "W"...now that we've got em' all in one spot, drop the MOAB's! |
| Cyrus | Posted 9/24/2007 11:31:49 AM | show profile Honestly, the easiest thing to do about this stuff is just to kick off people who violate terms of service. I haven't read them in depth, but I believe existing terms allow MB to kick these guys off. If this stuff continues, one has to wonder why they aren't doing it. Everybody deserves that, whether they're like us and pay for extra services, or not. ------ Cyrus Afzali Astoria Communications www.astoriacomm.com |
| ConfidentDesigner | Posted 10/25/2007 10:40:05 AM | show profile It's best to simply ignore these morons. By reacting to them, you're merely encouraging them. Old rule. Still works though. |
