Topic: Meeting with a newspaper recruiter

| gagner25 | Posted 9/18/2007 11:22:40 PM | show profile Just wondering if any of you have met with a newspaper recruiter before. I am going to meet with one (thanks to friend's help) because I am trying to switch over to newspapers. I have worked in magazines, wire news, and medical journal editing. I am a bit nervous because I have mostly worked on my editing, and only have five real-world published articles. I have a good amount of clips from college, but I know newspaper editors are not necessarily impressed with those. Can anyone offer any advice? I'm thinking I should start as a copy editor at a newspaper since that is my expertise, but I really want to be a reporter. If you have met with a recruiter before, can you offer any tips? Thanks! |
| candylilacs | Posted 9/19/2007 1:35:03 AM | show profile It's an interview It's an interview. Treat it as such. Bring a resume, clips and be able to talk about your abilities and apply them to the job. And don't tell him you only have five clips! I think being a copy editor is a good idea since they are as good as gold to most recruiters and editors. (Reporters for whatever strangeness are seen as a dime-a-dozen.) Good luck! ------ http://www.mswritesguide.blogspot.com |
| gagner25 | Posted 9/19/2007 1:44:11 AM | show profile is it an interview? Hi, thanks for the advice. It's not really an interview, though. I mean, he is not going to offer me a job. He is just going to help me "direct my energies," and take a look at my resume, according to my friend. My goodness, I wasn't even planning on wearing a suit, since this is not a job interview. I was going to do business casual. Is that wrong? |
| ManhattanMatt | Posted 9/19/2007 8:41:26 AM | show profile Are you kidding? Business *casual*?? Unless this recruiter is an old friend of yours and this is purely a social call, business attire is the only appropriate dress code. This is a PROFESSIONAL meeting in a BUSINESS setting. It's a no-brainer. |
| HisGirlFriday | Posted 9/19/2007 9:07:54 AM | show profile He may not be offering you a job at that meeting but he is in a position to help you get one in the future. Treat it as an interview and maybe it will turn into one. Be confident - talk about why you want to be a reporter and how your current skills will help you. And wear the suit. You will never regret over-dressing. But if he shows up in a suit and you're wearing khakis, you'll feel like a jerkoff. Good luck! |
