When a conservative reads the following three paragraphs of this New York Times story, the conservative is immediately put on the defensive because, in his or her mind any reference to Americans in Iraq MUST be portrayed in the positive light that they themselves see the US occupation of Iraq, hence the oft stated criticism that the media only focuses on the bad of Bush's war and never the good (as if the media had been lenient on Clinton when he tried to clean up George HW Bush's intervention in Somalia, but that's another story.) Anyway read this, and, if you would like, please explain to me why this is a "liberal piece of propaganda" (or not), and feel free to read he entire article: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/20/world/middleeast/20blackwater.html?pagewanted=print "WASHINGTON, Sept. 19 ? The shooting incident involving private security guards in Baghdad on Sunday that left at least eight Iraqis dead has revealed large gaps in the laws applying to such armed contractors. Early in the period when Iraq was still under American administration, the United States government unilaterally exempted its employees and contractors from Iraqi law. Last year, Congress instructed the Defense Department to draw up rules to bring the tens of thousands of contractors in Iraq under the American laws that apply to the military, but the Pentagon so far has not acted. Thus the thousands of heavily armed private soldiers in Iraq operate with virtual immunity from Iraqi and American law." |

I challenge any conservative on this board to offer the opinions on this particular news piece. I am, of course, not optimistic that conservatives on this board will rise to this challenge; they much prefer more rugged types of discourse, for which I am also more than happy to indulge. But if you want to try to be intelligent, then you can answer this challenge. Or, as I constantly remind you: any of you can rise to the challenge of listing your top 20 sources for news and information. (No conservative I have ever asked this question to has ever been able to answer it. And, yeah, there's a point to that.) |
