European ministers, diplomats and officials attending the Washington conference were scathing, particularly in private, over Mr. Bush's failure once again to commit to binding action on climate change. ...A senior European diplomat attending the conference, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the meeting confirmed European suspicions that it had been intended by Mr Bush as a spoiler for a major UN conference on climate change in Bali in December. "It was a total charade and has been exposed as a charade," the diplomat said. "I have never heard a more humiliating speech by a major leader. He [Mr Bush] was trying to present himself as a leader while showing no sign of leadership. It was a total failure." John Ashton, Britain's special envoy on climate change, who attended the conference, said: "It is striking here how isolated the US has become on this issue. There is no support among the industrialised countries for the proposition that we should proceed on the basis of voluntary commitments. ... UK Guardian Unlimited |

| catlondon | Posted 9/30/2007 11:11:13 PM | show profile The U.S. is isolated on the policy front, but not on the grassroots level. Many, many, many organizations are meeting the problem head-on, with an eye towards being able to make substantial changes at the policy level after 2008. Money will move the biofuel and renewable energy market and activists will move the change in consumer behavior. And there's a lot of good happening at the state level. Bush makes us look bad in the news, but he's pretty impotent in general. He's certainly not a help, but he's not a real hindrance either, given how long it ALWAYS takes for U.S. policy to catch up to grassroots. The real work is going on without him and without the Congress in general. |
| UGoGirl | Posted 10/1/2007 1:10:30 AM | show profile Cat, that's very true. There really is a lot going on across the U.S., some very strong local leaders actually leading, and I do believe that we'll come together as a country as a whole to address climate change in a serious way in the coming years. I really do feel this giant ship is turning in a positive way. And even Bush can't stop that. |
