Topic: Taxpayer Identification Number vs Social Security

| maggirl | Posted 10/2/2007 11:50:51 AM | show profile I'm employed full-time but freelance occasionally (making $5000 or less per year on the freelance assignments). A client I wrote for once (Time Out) required me to get a TIN/EIN number in order to get paid. I'm wondering if I should continue to use this number for future assignments with other clients. Are there any pros or cons to using one over the other? I know some people worry about identity theft. Specifically I'm wondering if there is a difference in the way you are taxed based on which number you use. Anyone know about that? |

But if you use an EIN, you are definitely categorized as a non-employee. I don't think it effects your tax any other way unless you, in turn, hire someone to work for you. |
| candylilacs | Posted 10/5/2007 9:52:34 PM | show profile I use my SS number, but if you are using a fictitious name like Maggirl Productions then you usually use a TIN. People also use them when they don't have a Social Security number. As long as you're not committing fraud, I wouldn't worry about it. Anyone else want to chime in? ------ http://www.mswritesguide.blogspot.com |
