just wondering if anyone has had any luck with all the mb job postings. if you've been hired, can you tell us about your experience?

I've gotten freelance gigs through them. No big story to tell. I responded to an ad or two. The editor called me. We talked, and I got the gig.

I haven't landed a job from them, but I have gotten a few interviews. That convinced me that people do actually read resumes and that you're not always just sending them off into the ether. That said, I think speed is key -- the hiring folks who advertise jobs on mb are so deluged with applicants that I'd be willing to bet that a resume sent any later than 24 hours after a posting goes up will probably not be read.

Yes I've gotten more than 1 fulltime positions through MB listings, plus a number of interviews. I've also hired people via job listings on MB.

I think it's the same with job listings on any online board -- your success depends in part with how good a fit you appear to be to the employer -- plus, as always, some random luck. Different employers have different ways of handling resumes collected via job boards so the best thing is to tailor your resume/cover letter as carefully as possible to match the requirements listed in the ad (in terms of both what you highlight about your background and in the format of the resume/cover letter). And if you have any connections at the company in question, you can always get in touch with them and see if they can send your resume directly to the person doing the hiring.

As for the jobs I've gotten through MB listings: There hasn't been any particular quality about them that related to where the ad was posted, I think. In fact, a lot of jobs are posted on multiple sites anyway.

My last full-time job was off an MB post.

My record is two for two (my last and current job). But both times, I made the effort to find out the names and direct e-mail contact for those jobs.

I've interviewed for a very good job on mb. In fact, I had three in-person interviews, including one with the co's CEO. All went well, and then they decided to morph the position into something else. I still haven't heard if they chose another candidate, but I have long since moved on to a new company anyway.

This is interesting feedback, considering many of the jobs are listed on other sites. I'm assuming NYC-based folks have a better shot at f/t jobs in NYC, but I've applied to mostly freelance jobs and haven't heard a thing--and I'm an experienced writer.

I got a job in Colorado from a job posted on MB, and I was living in Connecticut at the time. During the same job-hunting stint, I was also a finalist (1 of 2) for a senior editor position at a national mag in NYC.

Got a freelance gig. I contribute 1-2 times a month which suits my needs perfectly right now.

I've gotten interviews from it for a few FT spots. As another poster pointed out, I didn't send material to the website/HR as instructed in one case, but snail mailed the pub's top editor. Response time has been wildly variable, from within minutes of getting my resume to two weeks to two months before being invited to an interview, so I would NOT make the assumption people are all over your resume within days or it's over.

This is encouraging!

I've gotten numerous interviews through MB, plus two internships through listings for assistant positions.

Yes. Several years ago I made a bad move and took a position with a book publisher that just wasn't a good fit. A colleague told me about MB and it was a huge help.

I got several interviews, a nice freelance gig and then the full-time position that I've had since January '01.

I still find MB a huge help. Just checking the forums daily to see what the buzz is, the job listings to see who's hiring and what salaries/benefits are like, etc.

And now that I feel ready to move on, I'm looking at the listings to hopefully make my next move.

That's more than you asked for, but this is just to say that my MB experience has always been a positive one.

Yes. And a great many interviews for what I considered to be good jobs in my field(s).

mb job postings
I've gotten one freelance job that lasted 10 months. From a company halfway across the country from me who I never even talked to on the phone. I did a sample for them which they liked. Then they e-mailed me work, I e-mailed it back and checks came in the mail. How perfect - no human contact! Haven't gotten another through MB but am hopeful.

Yes, two full-time gigs.

Well, glad people are getting some positive results. Haven't had much luck, but this lets me know there are people actually reading resumes!

Got my very first ft magazine job via MB years ago (was it HireMinds then?). At Conde Nast, no less! Since then, I've gotten at least one job that I can recall, several interviews, plus hired many people from ads I've placed on MB.

Time is indeed of the essence with MB ads. I would get anywhere from 200 to 500 resumes per ad! Crazy! EA jobs garnered the most resumes. The first day would be insane, with my inbox packed with a hundred or so. I just didn't have time to look at them all, so if you didn't email within the first couple days, forget it.
