| Saramc3 | Posted 10/8/2007 2:07:35 AM | show profile | email poster I'm twenty years old and on my way to having a B.S. in Marketing from a good business school. I recently realized through taking art and design classes that my true passion lies in design. Right now I am clueless about design programs such as Adobe and InDesign but I have a good eye for design and would love to eventually have a job in that area. I am almost done with my marketing degree so I would like to finish it since I put alot of work and money into it, but then want to take classes towards a B.S. in Graphic Design. My issue is that I know experience trumps all schooling, and I really want to get a paid internship in either marketing or (preferebly) design but I am having trouble finding companies in the Baltimore/Columbia area. If anyone knows any great places to get started any help would be appreciated. Thanks =) |
| ConfidentDesigner | Posted 10/8/2007 9:47:39 AM | show profile Stick to Marketing! You'll be miserable in the design profession, believe me. Lots of know-nothings telling you what fonts and colors to use, micromanaging you to death and treating you no better than an admin/ assistant. Stick to that marketing degree and then YOU'LL be able to do that to some designer:) |
| cabaraba | Posted 10/8/2007 1:43:39 PM | show profile perfectly said ConfidentDesigner I'm a designer, and I can TOTALLY relate to being micro-managed by people who are not trained in design! Its like designers just execute the software with someone else's ideas. So mindless and frustrating!!! There are however, GOOD things about being a designer. I think it really depends on what company you work for and how talented you are. Saramc3, if your true passion is for design, then I say go for it. With a Marketing Degree on top of it, you can be a lot better at what you do. What can you lose with an internship? Try it out, and see if you like it. |
| darkfire | Posted 1/30/2008 5:25:43 PM | show profile You guys are depressing! Correct, maybe, but depressing! Seriously, designs are somewhat like writers in that we all get underpaid and overmanaged by people who usually don't have a clue about what we're doing, how or why. But there are great ways to make your mark and enjoy it at the same time. By all means, follow your passion. One caveat: You'll have a lot more opportunities if you look in places besides your immediate area. One tip: Try city/regional magazines. They're smaller scale operations that offer a lot more opportunity to beginners, and are often locally-owned/operated, so you may get the chance to do some good stuff. |
| Mag Girl | Posted 1/30/2008 5:54:36 PM | show profile a person with both marketing AND design skills would actually be highly marketable. I see jobs all the time asking for a hybrid communications/design person. As stupid as it is to combine those, you'd probably be able to find some great jobs at marketing firms. |
