... the new york times magazine?

the whole process seems so hidden. what makes an editor like a story idea? how long does it take to get news -- good or bad -- for an idea. Can anyone shed any light on this? I am just really discouraged. Thank you!

Query Letters and Time Goes By
The Writer's Market (writersmarket.com) has a lot of helpful insight into this process and what to expect, as well as how to increase your chances of acceptance. I can tell you that it took me a year to get a rejection for a Children's book I submitted to a publisher. I'm now three months into waiting for my next rejection... Good luck. It takes stamina, and a powerful pitch letter. Writer's market is the best guide to navigating what needs to happen.

to add to the above- most (but not all) magazines publish their editorial guidelines on their websites, which is very helpful in developing your pitch. Sometimes it's hidden in their media kit or advertising section.
