| magpub07 | Posted 10/10/2007 12:28:59 PM | show profile I know when I started looking for magazine jobs I was dead-set on editorial work, but I soon learned that there were many more job opportunites on the publishing side, especially in ad sales. And as I stayed on the publishing track, I also saw that it was a lot easier to rise in the ranks and make a much higher salary. mediabistro is offering a class on breaking into magazine publishing, and it is a great way to get started on this track. http://www.mediabistro.com/courses/cache/crs3170.asp |
| eddytompkins | Posted 10/10/2007 1:19:31 PM | show profile In my opinion, editorial work doesn't pay all that well, but it is attractive for other reasons. I think many writers/editors would tell you they are underpaid. I don't think many publishers or successful ad salespeople would say the same. |

Plus all the perks like a nice expense account, lunches, dinner, etc.... Of course I also dealt with obnxious media planners who never thanked you or requested certain spas for a massage. On top of it all, there was so much back stabbing. And then books started to fold left and right....which led me back to my true love. Writing! |

As an AE I make peanuts - and the ed. directors had to fight the CEO to have pay raised to that. In terms of entry-level jobs, editorial pays a reasonable rate, but not when you consider where the vast majority of mags are located: ridiculously expensive metropolitan centers. |
