where is everyone?

1. Choosing investments. Cleaning out storage lockers.

2. Still a jock. Not fond of a lot of girl-y behaviors, especially cattiness, gossip and backbiting; also not big on ruffles, bows, spike heels or other putatively "feminine" forms of dress.

3. 10-30 minutes if rushed.

4. My best friend from high school is still a good friend.

5. Chin length.

6. A few.

7. Dangerous sections of pre-Katrina New Orleans while researching my book.

8. Tied: northern Corsica; Mae Hong Son and Ko Phi Phi, Thailand; Machu Picchu.

9. Please. Can't imagine it.

10. None.

BQ: Long loud laugh as I ponder the choices.

1. What is on your "To Do" list that you just can't seem to get done?
Screenwriting, various house and yard projects.

2. For men, what are your more feminine traits?
I've been told I'm a lot more thoughtful and empathetic than a lot of guys. Oh--and I remember birthdays and anniversaries. But I still don't ask for directions.

3. How long does it take you to get ready in the morning from when you get out of bed to breakfast, shower, grooming and out the door?
About 45 minutes.

4. Are you still friends with any of your childhood pals?
Still have a best friend since birth and 4 good friends from high school.

5. How long is your hair?
Longer than a Marine's, but shorter than a TV news anchor's.

6. How many times have you truly been in love?
I've been smitten countless times, but truly in love, I'd say twice.

7. Where or what is the creepiest place you have visited?
Well there was that demon-haunting place in Greece, that was pretty freaky, but there was also an abandoned-looking town in Arizona on old Route 66 called Peach Springs. Me and 3 buddies were driving through on our way to hiking the Grand Canyon. It was midday, bright sunshine, and we were joking around when we pulled up to the gas station. Suddenly all our moods changed. We were going to hop out and buy some drinks at the vending machine, when I suddenly got this overpowering feeling that if we got out, we'd never be heard from again. I asked my friends, "Anyone mind if we just keep going and get our sodas somewhere else?" To my surprise, they all agreed. As we drove out of town, I told them about the vibe I got there, figuring they'd all bust on me for being weird (they are a geologist, surgeon, and insurance salesman--not the types to go for ghost stories). Again to my surprise, they all told me in dead seriousness they felt the same thing.

8. Where or what is the most magical place you have visited?
Ireland, Santorini, Martha's Vineyard have all had their moments.

9. Have you ever tried hard drugs such as heroin, coke or meth?
Nope; no interest.

10. How much money have you donated to charity this year?
If you count my wife's stepdaughter, a lot. If not, a few hundred.

~Bonus Question~
Who would you like to tell to fuck off?
I'd be far more diplomatic of course, but there'd be plenty of politicians I'd be happy to ask to leave.

Why, JBE, thanks for naming this week's questions after me!
1. What is on your "To Do" list that you just can't seem to get done?
Go to the gym. Read Middlesex. Send an e-mail. Break it off with a jerky guy I'm sorta seeing.

2. For women, what are your more masculine traits?
For men, what are your more feminine traits?
I can't think of any masculine traits that I have. I'm girly.

3. How long does it take you to get ready in the morning from when you get out of bed to breakfast, shower, grooming and out the door?
On average, about an hour and 15 minutes. I get distracted by the news on tv.

4. Are you still friends with any of your childhood pals?
I'm still friendly with some of them, but we're not close anymore.

5. How long is your hair?
Chin-length. Maybe a little longer.

6. How many times have you truly been in love?
I've said "I love you" twice and I kinda meant it both times. But over-the-hill in love? Never. That makes me very sad.

7. Where or what is the creepiest place you have visited?
The South Bronx in the middle of the night. People say it's changing, though.

8. Where or what is the most magical place you have visited?
Disney World when I was eight years old. I could barely contain myself, I was so excited. I took pics with all the Disney characters, and I had a ball! I'd love to go back. It's been twenty years.

9. Have you ever tried hard drugs such as heroin, coke or meth?
I've never tried drugs at all. I am not 420 friendly. That shit stinks. I totally bought into Reagan's "Just Say No!" campaign as a kid. And now it seems silly to try it.

10. How much money have you donated to charity this year?
About $300 total for breast cancer awareness.

~Bonus Question~
Who would you like to tell to fuck off?
Men who catcall in my neighborhood. My boss, though she's been less of a bitch to me this week. My dad.

working at home this week...
...which means i can jump on this if i want to!

1. What is on your "To Do" list that you just can't seem to get done?
finishing a book proposal. i gave an agent 3 mini-proposals; she showed interest in representing the only one of the 3 that had anything to do with my personal life--and, so, the one that is definitely hardest for me to dive into. i've got to get it done; i fear getting it done; i've got to get it done; i can't do it; etc.

2. For women, what are your more masculine traits?
For men, what are your more feminine traits?
interesting. had a long talk with a friend two nights ago about gender and gender identity. the very question of what is a masculine or a feminine trait is complicated, yes? that said--i rarely shave my legs, and i don't care if anyone thinks i should. if i want to do something (concert, play, movie) and no one can or wants to come with, i'll do it alone with no qualms. i've had no problem with asking guys out. i always pay for my own meals, etc., on dates (regardless of who asked who out)--why should the guy pay if we both work? boyfriend says: "you sneeze loudly." women are supposed to sneeze quietly?!

3. How long does it take you to get ready in the morning from when you get out of bed to breakfast, shower, grooming and out the door?
45 minutes or so.

4. Are you still friends with any of your childhood pals?
yes! and thrilled about it.

5. How long is your hair?
just above shoulder length.

6. How many times have you truly been in love?
hmm. 4? i'm counting my first love in the 5th grade, but i really think that did count, for me.

7. Where or what is the creepiest place you have visited?
among them: an eccentric artist's apartment about a decade ago--crammed with junk and visibly crawling with roaches.

8. Where or what is the most magical place you have visited?
among them: parts of ireland; sierra madre; a deserted beach this past summer on shelter island. being above the clouds in a plane always seems magical; though turbulence scares me terribly.

9. Have you ever tried hard drugs such as heroin, coke or meth?
ha! i don't think my identity is especially well hidden by my screen name. ah well. i did cocaine once when i was in college. my (older) siblings were doing it, and they offered me some! seriously.

10. How much money have you donated to charity this year?
i'd say close to a thousand bucks.

~Bonus Question~
Who would you like to tell to fuck off?
again, i'm not too anonymous here, so...
the parents of britney spears, lindsay lohan, michael jackson, etc.--people who profit from their children while taking a pass on parenting them or even seeing that they might be in need. many members of our current government. my shifty landlord. two of my exes (does it count if i already did tell them to fuck off, but i'd like to do it again?). happily, i'm on good terms with other exes. and two former bosses--quitting was the professional way of saying "fuck off."

1. What is on your "To Do" list that you just can't seem to get done?
My "to do" list....

2. For women, what are your more masculine traits?
Pushing 60 and still more tomboy than girly girl. A lot of 'girly stuff' makes me gag.
Still love to climb a good tree if I get a chance.
I can be pretty tough ....although, I think that is a trait most New Yorkers are familiar with.

3. How long does it take you to get ready in the morning from when you get out of bed to breakfast, shower, grooming and out the door?
There's something to be said of slowing down in older age. The closer to 60 I get, the slower in ALL things I am. But I still walk and ride my bike quite fast.

4. Are you still friends with any of your childhood pals?
Yes, lots, even though I live in a different country than they do.

5. How long is your hair?
Usually between the middle of my back and my waist.

6. How many times have you truly been in love?
One glorious time, I am still in love with the same wonderful man I fell in love with and married at 19.

7. Where or what is the creepiest place you have visited?
A house in Echo Park, Los Angeles that we rented when we moved to LA, we backed out because the vibe was so creepy and frightening. I brought a friend to check it out before we were to move in, she was creeped out too.

8. Where or what is the most magical place you have visited?
Moraine Lake in the Canadian Rockies.

9. Have you ever tried hard drugs such as heroin, coke or meth?
Yes, coke many, many years ago when I worked in the LA entertainment field in the 70's

10. How much money have you donated to charity this year?
Don't know, we give to homeless people on the street.

~Bonus Question~

Setting up a separate office space to do my work

2. For women, what are your more masculine traits?
For men, what are your more feminine traits?
I very much identify who I am with what I do. Until I lost my job last year, I've always been the breadwinner. Don't know how to deal with not being in charge of my own destiny.

3. How long does it take you to get ready in the morning from when you get out of bed to breakfast, shower, grooming and out the door?
The dogs/cats take me at least half an hour, but I can get myself out the door, good to go, in 20 minutes as long as I planned what I'll be wearing the night before.

Those who cause harm to others in pursuit of their own agendas

1. Get a real job. Clean my apartment. Find a boyfriend who isn't a complete d-bag.

2. I don't think I have any. I'm about as feminine as they come. Actually, I can't cook. So there you go.

3. About 45 minutes. And I don't eat breakfast, so all of that time is spent showering/ grooming.

4. Yes, I am (thanks to facebook, partially!)

5. Most of the way down my back.

6. Twice.

7. Any cemetery.

8. Italy, especially Venice. I'm dying to go back.

9. Nope.

10. $0. My official excuse is, I can't afford to (which is true), but even more truly, I just don't feel like it.

Bonus: The guy in a job interview who asked me how I could afford to live in the neighborhood I live in. Later, when I'd asked him a few questions, he asked, "well, aren't you going to ask about salary and benefits?" BTW, this was the first (and for me, the only) round of interviews. Grrr.

1. What is on your "To Do" list that you just can't seem to get done?
Getting my winter clothes out. However, given my present situation, having them sitting in bags may be a good idea. Just grab and go.
I also am having a hard time reading the text book for my EMT-CC class. I just don't give a shit.

2. For women, what are your more masculine traits?
I belch very loudly.
Same for farting.
I prefer pants to dresses.
Most of my friends are male.
I just discovered that I am a hell of a shot with rifles and shotguns.
If I had testicles I'd probably spend a good deal of time scratching them.
Despite all of this, I am still quite feminine. My nails are polished and I smell pretty.

3. How long does it take you to get ready in the morning from when you get out of bed to breakfast, shower, grooming and out the door?
Half and hour--including showering, makeup and blowdrying my hair.

4. Are you still friends with any of your childhood pals?
No.

5. How long is your hair?
Middle of my back. Trying to get it down to my waist.

Maybe twice but I think they were more infatuations than love. That said, I guess I've never been in love. Sad.

7. Where or what is the creepiest place you have visited?
The Burren in Ireland was hard to handle despite being oddly beautiful. I could feel the desperation of long gone souls resonating in the air.
There is also a town on Long Island that is just "off." I get the chills driving through it. It is home to an abandoned mental institution.
I also get a weird vibe from the entire state of Pennsylvania. Every time I have visited, I can't wait to leave.
Just doesn't feel right to me. Not sure why.
Lastly, a former house I rented in Water Mill on Long Island was awful. I know that it was haunted. I broke my lease just to get the hell out of there.
I'm very sensitive to psychically imprinted history and memories.

8. Where or what is the most magical place you have visited?
Cobh, Ireland
Most of Vermont
The Maine coastline
The office of a former teacher back in high school that was a refuge for me
Red Rocks ampitheater in Colorado
My grandparent's house as as a child
A road in my village that is just ripe with a wonderful feeling. There is magic there and I often walk the road expecting to see fairies and nymphs trotting next to me.
My bed during afternoon naps.

9. Have you ever tried hard drugs such as heroin, coke or meth? Hell no. I smoked pot a few times in high school and had such panic attacks from it, that I never tried anything else.

10. How much money have you donated to charity this year?
About $200 and also clothing and food.

~Bonus Question~

I feel the same way about Pennsylvania but thought it was just me being weird. I feel depressed the minute I cross the border into the state -- and feel better whenever I get to Maine.

Glad to hear that nikongirl and Angela are fellow tomboys/girls even with big age differences. Climbing trees is a good skill at any age.

Ah, c'mon JBE--Pennsylvania's not that bad! There're a lot of good folk here. :-)
Janetblueyes Posted – 10/11/2007 2:18:20 PM | show profile
Keltoi, If you live in PA, then no doubt there a fine folks there! There is just something that I can't describe that makes me very uneasy.
I think it may have to do with all the battles that were fought there and the death of so many soldiers. I watched something on Discovery where they mentioned Gettysburg as being one of the most haunted places in America.
Caitlin, glad to hear you feel similar about it.
Just a very weird place for me and one that I avoid.
keltoi2 Posted – 10/11/2007 2:25:07 PM | show profile
Actually, just moved to PA last year. Born and raised Jersey boy who worked in Manhattan for 20 years. But there are a lot of nice folks and pretty--and far cheaper--places here.

And yes, I guess the many miles of brooding mountains and deep, dark forests could get a little freaky. And with all of the carnage that happened in Gettysburg, not surprised it's one of the most haunted places.

Oh, I never tire of talking about myself...
1. What is on your "To Do" list that you just can't seem to get done?
Clean out closets
Move crap to basement
Go to Alaska
Go see the polar bears
Stop spending money

2. For women, what are your more masculine traits?
For men, what are your more feminine traits?
Well, before antidepressants, I didn't like to talk to people
I refuse to ask for directions
I am freakishly strong
I handle the finances and take care of the car in my marriage
My name is first on the mortgage/house
My name is first on all our credit cards
I like to sit around in my underwear with my hand shoved down the front

3. How long does it take you to get ready in the morning from when you get out of bed to breakfast, shower, grooming and out the door?
Well, I get out of bed between 6 and 7 and don't leave until 9:30 but I walk the dog and write for an hour at least. I only spend about 15-30 minutes showering/getting dressed. I choose writing over grooming every time. I carry makeup to put on later but never do. My hair is a mess.

4. Are you still friends with any of your childhood pals?
I just revived two friendships: one with my best friend from summer camp and one with my best friend from the neighborhood. Nothing beats childhood friends.

5. How long is your hair?
Down to my scapulae

6. How many times have you truly been in love?
Twice: first love and my husband now.

7. Where or what is the creepiest place you have visited?
Basement under my parents' former condo in Maine. Couldn't stand all the way up in it. Very claustrophobic.

8. Where or what is the most magical place you have visited?
There was this beautiful cemetery in Northern Ireland on a cool, crisp day. Scotland is quite magical too. Also Kasteel Well in Holland.

9. Have you ever tried hard drugs such as heroin, coke or meth?
Nope, thank God. Oh, wait, I tried coke once in college, but I think I did it wrong because nothing happened.

10. How much money have you donated to charity this year?
I think none. It's been a tough year. But last year we send several boxes of clothes and toiletries to Katrina victims.

~Bonus Question~
Who would you like to tell to fuck off?
GEORGE W. BUSH. ANN COULTER. BILL O'REILLY.

There are some very gloomy places in PA, the entire city of Philadelphia being one of them, but that's one of the things I love about it. I intentionally moved into Edgar Allan Poe's old neighborhood.
