I have heard there are people who can edit and assist with book proposals. I am wondering if anyone can recommend someone who does this and has an idea of the cost. I have been talking to a publisher who is interested in my project, but wants to see more from the proposal. I already have what I think is a good proposal and some good sample chapters. The sample chapters were what might have made up for what the proposal lacks. I am supposed to hand in a final draft of my proposal and I don?t want to blow this chance. Please help.

Contact lucy@lucyhedrick.com.

She ain't cheap, though. I heard the cost is $5,000.00, but she's had several books of her own published.

If you decide you want to go the DIY route, I found the book Nonfiction Book Proposals Anybody can Write by Elizabeth Lyon very helpful.

Thanks. $5K is a little too much for me. Maybe this is a service I can't afford. But if they are charging that much, I imagine they must know what they are doing.

It would be nice if there were people who'd take it on commission -- like, $2,500 upon completion, $2,500 upon book contract.

The reason it costs so much is that a book proposal is a bunch of work. By the time you've done all that work, you're half done the darn book sometimes.

There are some good books about doing your own -- Lyon's comes to mind. There's also a classic, How to Write a Book Proposal: Books: Michael Larsen

You might ask someone to give you a rate since you've already done so much of the footwork yourself. Couldn't hurt to ask politely -- and let them accept on the conditional grounds that once they see it, your work is significant.
