So I agreed to have coffee with a fellow journalist who knows a friend of mine. He is older and has done way more in his career than I have so far. He had a lot of questions about my work and at first it seemed as though he was interested in helping me out, as he said. That was not why I met with him. Then he got very grabby and tried several times to kiss me. I was so grossed out. The next few days he called a lot. I did not take any of his calls. Are there a lot of pigs out there trying to play mentor to younger journalists? I hope this is not the case.

pervs galore!
Yes, I have had a very similar experience and so has a friend of mine. I have also had experiences with older journalists who were kind, helpful and would never perv out. I have come to the conclusion that perverts and lecherous types are everywhere, regardless of the biz. You just have to be mindful of that and stay away from those sorts -- they make their intentions known fairly quickly I have found.

happened to me
he's, i dunno, probably almost 30 years older than i am; and married! we were covering the same event; he suggested lunch together during a break. i was glad to accept and hoping to get good advice from him. what i got was someone trying to hold my hand over the table and foot-touch me under it. he did have some decent advice, to be honest, when i could get him to talk about business. but it was not by any stretch worth the awkwardness and insult. (was i supposed to be flattered that a married man, to whom i'd made it clear in any case that i am not available, was acting this way? i was insulted.) i saw him again months later. i had to think fast in order to avoid the hug (a hug? we are professional acquaintances at the very most) that he tried to deliver while also avoiding further awkwardness.

i was telling a friend about being more seriously sexually harrassed by a boss a long time ago, in a different field. she said, "hey, it happens to every woman." jeez, is that true?

I know this sort of thing can happen anywhere. In this case, I just did not see it coming. I wish I had slapped him or spilled my drink on him.
