I've looked at a lot of oil data these last years, but here's some data that I find particuarly disturbing. It just shows the scale of our energy (oil in particular) dependency problem, and why small solutions (e.g., small increases in the required fuel economy of crs) are unlikely to be enough.

Last year the world produced about one cubic mile of oil. To obtain in just one year the amount of energy contained in one cubic mile of oil, we would need to have produced (EACH YEAR for 50 years for all of these below):

4 gorges dams,
52 nuclear power plants,
104 coal plants,
32,850 windmills, or
91,250,000 solar panels
