I've been a freelance Writer-Producer in TV here in New York for the past 6 years. I became freelance by default: the show I worked on was cancelled and I started temping in TV. Now I want to go back to being full time but can't seem to get out of the freelance pool. What should I do? I have tried applying for FT gigs at my current TV station without luck.... Anyone have any advice? (Seems if you're a great freelancer... they want to keep you in the pool.)

(On a separate note....My Dad has an old world idea that being freelance means being unemployed....even though I work my tail off each and every week.)

It's very hard to break out of freelancing ...
I've been there.

It sounds like professional suicide, but what you need to do is NOT freelance for organizations for whom you want to land a staff position.

Once you're in the door as a freelancer (particularly if you're a talented and reliable freelancer), a freelancer forever you shall be ... because it's not in their best interest to *lose* you as a freelancer.

did you do it???
ManhattanMatt... thanks for your response. Did you manage to transition out of freelance to full time? And if you did....how did you manage it?

Yes I did ...
How did I do it? Networking ... and a bit of luck. Unfortunately show producer jobs like mine are few and far between, and my break came only after an executive producer made a colossal mistake and got fired.
