Wow. Just when you thought the war in Iraq couldn't get any worse, in comes Turkey with 100,000 or so troops ready to play hardball. They want to invade they claim because of self-defense -- the PKK is a terrorist group and they've already attacked and captured Turkish soldiers. The U.S. who've invaded Iraq from halfway around the world for flimsier reasons says that's no way to conduct international affairs, give diplomacy a chance, etc. et. (heh-heh). Yup, bringing peace and stability to the Middle East. Can't you just taste it?

Yup, I see the flowering of democracy everywhere in the Mideast. Oh--wait--that's poppies, not democracy....

George and Dick have done a bang-up job of destabilizing one of the most dangerous places on the planet, not to mention recruiting more terrorists than Osama could ever have dreamed.

But wait--their work's not done. On the off chance that there just may be a few people around the planet who still respect the US and a few moderate Moslems who don't hate the US, for an encore, they're going to bomb Iran!

But what you have to remember is this military action in TUrkey is a LONG time in the making and predates this administration by decades. Turkey has always felt like the "Kurdistan" area of Iraq should be rightfully its land, and they have dealt with the PKK for a long, long time. I think it was just a matter of time before they took serious military action, and the war in Iraq is giving them a convenient reason to escalate.

But the US is not blameless for this situation entirely - we've dabbled in supporting certain branches of the PKK in the past, and we have not in the past forcefully used our (formerly) powerful position in international affairs to help solve the problem beyond stating it is a problem.

I know the PKK-Turkey battle has been around far longer than George and Dick's Excellent Adventure; but it's their opening of the Pandora's Box that has made it a far graver threat. Turkey sees a "Kurdistan" developing in northern Iraq with oil money to back it up, a danger they are not willing to see become reality.

Keltoi, I think the war did make it easier, but this has been on the Turks' minds for a long time. I've discussed this in depth with my Turkish husband.

There's a reason why it's been on Turkey's mind for a long time; the PKK has attacked and killed many Turkish soldiers and civilians. While the US made up a bunch of crap to invade a country for its oil and for geopolitical gains, Turkey is threatening to enter Northern Iraq because of valid reasons. No country would stand to see its people killed by a terrorist group.

I find it incredibly hypocritical of the US to say that Israel had every right to attack Lebanon last summer, under the banner of terrorism, but when Turkey (a Muslim country) wants to defend itself, all of a sudden, it's about diplomacy and restraint. Give me a break!!

So now we have Musharaff suspending the Constitution and dumping the Supreme Court and Pakistani police beating up lawyers in the streets. Yup, the ripples of Bush's Iraqi democracy are spreading far and wide.
