Does any one know of any travel magazines based in Chicago. I'd like to move to Chicago in the short to medium term future and I'd love to establish a relationship with this pub as a freelancer. They can't all be in New /york, right?

Thanks.

You can live in Chicago and freelance for a travel publication that's located anywhere. The only Chicago pubs I know of are the Tribune, Sun Star, Time Out, and there's probably a Chicago city magazine. It's a great city--wonderful architecture, food, music, culture and much lower cost of living than big cities in the Northeast -- is there anything else one needs?

As a freelancer, you can live anywhere.

True about Chicago: You'll want to freelance for pubs that aren't located in Chicago. There aren't a lot of magazines published locally, and as a result, there isn't a lot of magazine work. I believe there's a lot of writing work if you want to do copywriting, legal, financial or health writing. And, Time Out and the Tribune, and I think Chicago magazine, all use freelancers.

Take a look at the local Chicago board further down on MB's bb page. There isn't much action there ...

I'm a freelancer in Chicago, having pretty much worked for the two consumer publishers outside of the newspapers and Chicago, Ebony/Jet. It's a great place to live--not as costly as New York, but still a major metropolitan city with the requisite culture--and the people are friendlier. It's not much of a publishing town anymore, outside of textbooks and trade mags, but you don't have to be down the street from a company to freelance for it.

actually ...
Thanks for all the tips on how to be a freelancer in Chicago. I think that my initial post wasn't clear. I am a travel writer. I live abroad but eventually I would like to move back to the US, preferably Chicago, and work for a travel magazine on staff. My idea was to establish a relationship with them as a freelancer while I'm living abroad so I'd be (hopefully) placed in higher consideration if a full time gig comes up. I know that one pub, travelgirl, is based in Georgia. So I was wondering if there was a travel pub in Chicago that I hadn't thought of ...
