Has anyone here ever landed a job at a consumer magazine in NYC without knowing someone there or without having interned there? I've spent a couple years in trade publishing and would really like to make the switch but it's so discouraging because it seems like it's really who you know in this business that matters. Just curious about the success rate of anyone that's broken through that barrier on pure talent alone and not any possible connections.

I did.
Three major (i.e., top ten) consumer magazines, no connections, no internships at those particular pubs. It was luck, timing, and talent (I hope, LOL!).

Wow, I'm impressed (and a little envious!). Any advice for someone like me? I actually have done an internship at a consumer mag so I suppose I have one connection, but so far that hasn't worked for me. So let's pretend I had none.

Anybody else have something to contribute on this topic? Or shall I take the lack of overwhelming responses as a sign that this rarely happens, the whole getting a job at a consumer mag w/o any connections?
