| ZeldaMedia | Posted 10/24/2007 1:28:49 PM | show profile Has anyone ever used a career coach? If so what were your experiences? Did it help? Where can I find a seasoned media industry coach based in Massachusetts? Any leads are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Z PS - I would post this in the Massachusetts section but it seems like no one really visits there regularly. |

| Metro Writer | Posted 10/24/2007 10:20:54 PM | show profile I've known people who have done it and it's a waste of money. All the coaches tell you to do is to look into yourself and define what you want in your career, and then charge you $1,500 for telling you that. It's a new career that people who were laid off go into in order to try to make a living. It may be that you need a job (or better job) in media in your area. Network, network, network. Find media clubs -- press clubs, public relations association clubs, and writers' organizations. You can also join the Chamber of Commerce. |
| caitlinkelly | Posted 10/25/2007 10:29:59 AM | show profile While a coach may waste your money, simply meeting people in your industry won't offer the insight, guidance or mentoring this person might need. People may tell you about job openings they know of, but that is something different -- and some people need help to get those jobs, not just toss a resume at them. |
| globetrotter78 | Posted 10/25/2007 10:46:27 AM | show profile ZeldaMedia, I've never personally used a career coach, but I disagree that they are a waste of money. They can offer support, guidance and accountability, and some people really need that. They also have a lot of tools to help you find out what kinds of jobs would fit you best. I've reported a lot on career issues and I think that for certain people, it can be a wise investment. I would recommend getting client referrals from any coach you're thinking about using, and make sure that they are a part of the International Coach Federation.
