Anyone have any success stories? I could use some encouragement right about now!

I've sold a lot of essays (mostly 1,000-word back of the book stuff) to a lot of consumer magazines, though never those two. In every case there was never any pitching involved. I just wrote the essay and mailed or emailed it to an editor. I broke into lots of big consumer magazines with editors I didn't know that way, so it can be done. Personally, I wouldn't pitch an essay unless you are really talking about a long feature article that will take a lot of research. In most cases, an essay is all about execution rather than the central idea. So if it's a personal experience thing in the 1000 word range, I would just write it up and send it out.
