| pholiday | Posted 10/27/2007 2:28:39 PM | show profile I am taking part 2 of the Edelman writing test for a job next week. Anyone know what it is or what to expect? |
| Law School Lackey | Posted 10/30/2007 12:35:06 AM | show profile is this the PR writing test? i took one in the chicago office in 2003 -- things may have changed. but i had to develop a fake campaign for a whirlpool personal valet system. it was a dryer on steroids that also steamed and drycleaned. the other part was writing a mock VNR script for the product, i believe. hope this helps. |
| TVchick | Posted 10/30/2007 9:36:47 AM | show profile sounds horrible!!! I had to write some kind of a campaign down--solve a publicity issue for a client. Luckily I was in school and was working on something like that so I wrote it all down. In two hours. Probably total garbage. I didn't get the job (and happy for it!) |
| pholiday | Posted 10/30/2007 10:25:24 AM | show profile Interesting, I thought it would be more straight proofreading etc. The interview is in Chicago office, in the editorial dept. Any thoughts on working for Edelman ... good, bad, ugly? They seem like a good firm from the outside looking in? |
| TVchick | Posted 10/30/2007 12:24:03 PM | show profile all I know is they are extremely reputable but the hours can be grueling. |
| Foreigner | Posted 11/1/2007 10:29:06 AM | show profile Perhaps a naive question: is it usual for PR agencies to require you to actually submit a PR campaign plan/strategy as part of a job application? It seems like it's a lot of intellectual property to ask someone to just hand over... |
| mediaaddict | Posted 11/2/2007 6:42:40 PM | show profile I've also heard the hours are pretty rough, but that's common with a lot of agencies. The other thing I've heard is to be prepared to work from the ground on up - they rarely start anyone above entry level even if you have prior experience. Good luck with the test! |
| Write2Live | Posted 11/5/2007 11:03:55 PM | show profile edelman writing test pholiday, did you already take part 2 of your test? i'm curious to hear about it. i'm supposed to take a test with them next week... |
| Cyrus | Posted 11/6/2007 10:55:30 AM | show profile submitting a PR plan Just out of curiousity, are these folks actually wanting a complete plan or just a strategy outline for a campaign? The latter can be done pretty easily by someone with the chops for it; the former requires a lot of research on appropriate outlets, etc. Much of this whole dance is just superiority-complex driven, to be honest with you. Once these guys get the jobs, they unleash untargeted pitches on the world, giving rise to complaints from journalists, such as Wired editor Chris Anderson, whose scathing critique is making the rounds of the blogosphere now. ------ Cyrus Afzali Astoria Communications www.astoriacomm.com |
| pholiday | Posted 11/6/2007 12:05:14 PM | show profile Write2Live Which department at Edelman do you have an interview with? |
| Write2Live | Posted 11/6/2007 12:35:56 PM | show profile It's for the editorial department as well. I was told it's nothing you can prepare for...they just want to see my writing style and how I'd approach different scenarios. I'm a little nervous about it though. I guess fear of the unknown. Plus, they told me to block out 4-6 hours to complete it. |
| pholiday | Posted 11/6/2007 1:02:01 PM | show profile Nothing to be worried about. It is a simple grammar, punctuation, etc. test. Looks like we are both up for the same job! Let me know of you get it and how it is. Cheers. |
| Write2Live | Posted 11/9/2007 9:45:27 PM | show profile good luck to you, too! i'll let you know how it goes. |
| WritingSoul | Posted 11/9/2007 10:49:47 PM | show profile | email poster Are they paying you for those 4-6 hours? Because if they are not, I personally find it offensive that a company would make you do a "test" or "homework" just because they can and know you want to work for them. Isn't looking at your clips and speaking with past clients and yourself enough? |
| joywriter | Posted 11/25/2007 10:54:01 PM | show profile pholiday/Write2Live/Writing test How did the Chicago Edelman writing test go? I'm curious to know...! |
| pholiday | Posted 11/26/2007 12:43:02 PM | show profile I have not heard anything. The test itself was fine, really simple. Write2live? |
| Write2Live | Posted 11/27/2007 7:28:40 PM | show profile Actually, my test was a bit more than copyediting, grammar. I would've been fine with that! I was basically given 3 writing tasks to complete (release, web copy and speech). I've not heard a word since the test...not surprised though. I don't think I gave them what they were looking for. I just wish I had been given a heads-up about the content. I would've at least been able to review a few speeches and go into the test feeling more prepared. Sigh. |
| Write2Live | Posted 12/12/2007 1:01:22 AM | show profile I didn't get the gig. However, halfway through the test I wasn't so sure it was the right job for me anyway. The test itself was not too bad, but I wish I'd been given a heads up about the content. I might've brushed up on my speechwriting prior to going in. |
