Someone that I know from high school is about to reach some prominence in NYC quarters. My question: Can I pitch a profile to TONY or sim publication? We are not close friends, but I do know him personally, so I believe I could get good access...

What's the ethics here?

I don't think it's a problem- he's an acquaintance,
not a friend or relative.

My friend...
Absolutely. If you pitch him with integrity, honesty and no expectations of special favors. Good luck!

go for it!
This is an awesome opportunity, not least of all because you presumably already have access to a whole host of people who knew him back when he was the school nerd, or the class clown, or homecoming king, or whatever.

To me, the hardest part of writing a profile is finding the subject's friends, family and acquaintances and getting them to talk. You're halfway done on that front before you even start.

Don't forget to mention that to the editor in your pitch, by the way.
