Hi all-I'm a midwesterner who just got a job in NYC and need somewhere to stay pretty soon. I've had an internship in the city before and know of a few places, but have heard of an all-female residence called Webster Hall that is supposed to be safe and clean. I'd like to check it out, but can't find a thing about it on the internet (evidently a nightclub called Webster Hall has better search engine optimization.)

If this place still exists, please let me know. Thanks.

It exists, and I lived there. It is safe (security in the lobby and all guests had to sign in) and clean (maid service five days a week!). It is also tiny and noisy (my room overlooked the entrance to the Lincoln Tunnel) and requires using a shared bathroom. If you're fresh out of college, it's not dissimilar to a dorm--I was in my late 20s and had to adjust.

Also, if you're already established in the city, the Webster may curtail your social life--no men are allowed up to your room, and there's a curfew for female guests (midnight, I think). Overall, I'd recommend it, but visit first if you can manage.

Thank you soooo much
I am just out of college (May 2007), so noise and tiny spaces don't bother me too much.

Do NOT live at The Webster
I interned in the city last summer and was planning to live at The Webster on the recommendation of a childhood friend who was, at the time, living there while she interned. She told me it was like a dorm and I thought that that would be fine since I had lived in a dorm during college. When I arrived with all my belongings, just a few days before beginning my internship, I was shocked by what I found. The rooms are super tiny, dark, and dingy with a little bed that looks like what I imagine a jail cot to look like. The hallways and common areas look like something out the Twlight Zone and all of the residences I saw looked to be in their 40s or even older... in short, DO NOT LIVE THERE if you can at all avoid it.

I was lucky enough to find summer housing at the new FIT dorm just two blocks away, but it was a huge hassle that resulted in me having to live in a little hotel room for my first week at my internship and in New York. Do anything you can to avoid living there!
