| Foreigner | Posted 11/7/2007 4:01:59 PM | show profile My client, who has a very limited budget, is going to feature very prominently in a TV segment that will be shot later this week and will air later this month. I think my client should purchase a copy of the story for marketing purposes, etc, but I've never had to do this before, so I have a few questions, that some of you may know answers to: Roughly how much would a media monitoring company charge to purchase a 4-minute (or thereabouts) story that aired during the day or mid-evening on a local TV station in a major Midwestern city? What rights does my client have to this video once they've purchased it? I'm guessing they've only purchased it for their own use and if they want to use it at, say tradeshows, they may have to seek copyright permission from the TV station? If they don't want to spend the money (which I think would be a mistake), what are their other options - link to it from their Web site? If they recorded the segment themselves, I'm guessing it would look amateurish compared to the quality of a segment recorded by a professional media monitor? Also, how soon before/after the program airs should they alert the media monitor to it? And finally (!) can anyone suggest a good media monitor? |

Assuming you are in a major city, they will likely already be monitoring the program in question, but you should ask the rep on the phone all the questions above. They are very helpful. The cost shouldn't be more than a few hundred, AT MOST, and yes, you are right - the client absolutely should purchase it so they can use it later in a reel to leverage further coverage. As for the rights to reuse, you will probably have to go through TV station or the specific show/studio that filmed it. I would ask the producer you are working with who might be the appropriate outlet to contact for clearance. Finally, if you have a good relationship with the producer you are working with, you can also ask if it might be possible to get a copy of the segment from them. Some companies happily do this; however there are others who don't. It never hurts to ask what your options are. Either way, I think the cost of a monitoring service is worth the security in knowing that you will get a professionally edited segment. |
