Topic: Turning down a job

| bookmap | Posted 11/7/2007 4:09:19 PM | show profile I previously posted a topic about a phone interview I have coming up in a couple days. (my old screen name was mp397203) But with a couple weeks to think about it, I realize I don't really want it. Scholarly publishing doesn't really excite me, and I don't want to get stuck in it when I really want to be in trade book publishing. Obviously I won't be cancelling the interview, but what would be the best way to go about declining/avoiding a second interview? |
| AWC | Posted 11/7/2007 4:47:47 PM | show profile I would cancel the phone interview -- why waste everyone's time if you've already made your decision? Just call or email the person and say that you are bowing out of the interview because you have decided to pursue other opportunities. That's it -- no need to offer any further details. |
| dribbledrive1 | Posted 11/7/2007 4:52:40 PM | show profile I would still do the interview. It's good practice and who knows what might come out of it? If they offer the job or ask for a second interview, just tell the truth: You enjoyed talking with them, but after thinking about the matter, you've decided you want to go into trade book publishing rather than scholarly publishing. Trust me, it will not be a big deal: they'll move on to the next candidate and quickly forget you. |
| foodlit | Posted 11/7/2007 5:19:44 PM | show profile Definitely do the interview and just try to gather as much information as possible. Perhaps the job/environment is better than you think. You often don't know until you learn more and things aren't always what they seem, they're often better! Good luck, Pam |
| Mr Media | Posted 11/8/2007 12:56:39 PM | show profile I don't want to discourage you but a job, is a job, is a job! If somebody is offering you a writing job I say take the interview anyway. And you want to know why? The reason why is maybe you will REGRET NOT DOING THE INTERVIEW. I say go for it! Also, think about it this way, yes you want to get into trade publishing but the most important thing is EXPERIENCE. Oh my goodness, I would kill to be in your shoes right now! I have been doing freelance for the last couple of years and I want a job in the publishing industry ANY JOB that deals with the editorial side of publishing. I think this is a golden opportunity for you. All I go to say is TAKE THE INTERVIEW do not MISS this opportunity. |
