mainly, i want to work in book editing. right now, i'm in a year long master's program in librarianship in the uk. i'm from the us, where i graduated less than a year ago from a small but well known liberal arts school with a focus in literature. while i like a lot of things about the program i am in and enjoy working in a library, i can't help but feel i'm better suited to editing and would enjoy it more. i chose to pursue librarianship over editing because it seemed to offer more geographical freedom, but now i feel i'd rather have a job i'd love than one i only like, regardless of location.

i've worked in libraries and university records departments in the past. i have experience as a peer writing tutor, a position i held through college. the only editing experience i've had was working with a small business, editing flower catalogues for a few months over a school break. my poetry has been published in a few places. a short story of mine won an award at seventeen magazine a few years back.

would it be impossible for me to get a job as an editorial assistant based on these qualifcations?

tough....
I have a master's in information & library science with a background in book publishing (was an editorial assistant for a few years then an associate editor)--I've been out of publishing since 2002 (when i went to grad school) but have had some great experience since (librarian and otherwise) and am having an incredibly difficult time getting back into book publishing--at any level (i'm in my mid-30s). then again, i'm in nyc. i think it all depends on timing, who you know, etc.
can't hurt to try!
definitely check bookjobs.com and of course mediabistro for job announcements...

oh--and another thing...
i have more than quadrupled my salary since getting my mls degree...the mls is an extremely in-demand degree with tons of possibilities aside from working as a traditional librarian...
