So I need to get a new set of cards made up and my old source isn't much help. I've heard there are a bunch of options online. Can anyone recommend a good business card printer? I'm looking for:

1) quality (not flimsy)
2) relatively quick turnaround
3) reasonable rates

As far as reasonable pricing, I'm not sure what the going rate is for cards, so input on that would be helpful.

If anyone's had experience with Staples/Kinko's I'd be interested in hearing that, but I'm assuming they're probably not as nice as working with a designer, either locally or digitally.

Thanks very much in advance for any advice!

www.vistaprint.com

They're great, fast and even free if you get the version that has their logo on it...I paid for mine and they were dirt cheap and there's loads of templates and graphics you can use to easily put together a sharp looking card.

They are better and cheaper than Staples. I looked into several options and Vistaprint was the best of the bunch.

Good luck,
Pam

Does anyone know of a place that would print more unique/customized business cards at reasonable enough rates?

I had a good experience with OvernightPrints.com. I was able to upload my own design, and they looked really nice. I even chose to have rounded corners to be a little different. The card stock was pretty good, too. My husband, who is a designer and really pays attention to such things, also used them for his personal cards. They messed up on one batch, but they apologized for the error and reprinted them correctly.

Right now they are running a promotion--100 free cards. I don't even think there is a purchase requirement. If I can find the promo code in my email, I will post it here.

Not sure if you are in NY or not--but if you are, and are in Brooklyn, there's a good little copy shop on Joralemon St in Bklyn Heights, right off of Court St (around the corner from Kinkos, actually). I don't remember the name of it, but when I was living there I got cards there & they had good quality stock. It was fast & not too expensive, from what I remember.

look in your local phone book under commercial printer. there will be tons and they will use whatever paper stock and whatever colors you want. in most cities, there are even commercial printers who specialize in just doing business cards. anyone should be able to do them in a couple of days max.

Thanks
Sorry for disappearing there (multiple deadlines). These are all good suggestions so I have some fun research to do! Thank goodness for the long Thanksgiving weekend. Thanks again!

I'm looking for more "unusual" types of business cards-- with a unique shape, or from unique materials?

The thing with going with a commercial printer is that you really have to have a designer to put the card together for you. And that can cost a bunch. Especially for four color jobs. Also, custom stock is expensive because the job has to be run alone. Whereas most of these online print deals like at Vista and Overnight prints are gang runs--meaning they run your job with a bunch of others on a single sheet. Works great if you're not too worried about color.

Odd specialty sizes are really expensive because they have to create a special die to cut the shape you want--unless you're just looking for a non-standard rectangle or square. Straight cuts are cheap. Overnight Printing does have a rounded corner option.

I used to work as a designer at Kinko's -- they outsourced their raised ink cards. Typically, for ones designed/printed/cut on site, they had big issues in the printing/cutting process -- getting things centered was a bear.

I have heard good things about Overnightprints.com, and thought their readymade art superior to vistaprint.

However, vistaprint.com, especially when you figure in specials, is cheaper and can be just as fast. Go to SPECIALS and they frequently have super deals.

What most people don't realize is you're not limited to their readymade designs -- you can choose to design your own, and you can surf their 10,000 images for free. You type in "leather" and it pulls up hundreds of images. You can narrow it to "leather shoe" and browse only photos and still get piles of choices. I don't know why they don't make this benefit clearer to their customers.

I have used them to create business and postcards for my businesses, b&b, my sisters and friends.

If you need a bigger quantity == in the thousands iof postcards for example -- then there are better choices out there.

vistaprint
I'll second going with vistaprint. The last ones I ordered allowed you to upload any photos, logo, etc. that you wanted, and there was no vistaprint logo on them (in the past I think it may have said vistaprint on the back). It even let you print info or a quote on the back of the cards, which I didn't do as I like to use the back of cards to write info as needed or to jot down other people's info for myself.

These cards cost something like $7 (they were the "free" version); I bought them in the UK so I don't know if the U.S. vistaprint service offers the same options.
