I've recently just graduated college with a degree in marketing/communications. My passion lies in writing, but I was turned away from it after I spoke with college career counselors who all but told me not to go into the journalism. I really regret doing that and have been trying to get into the industry. I'm working right now in sales. Is there any advice that anyone can offer me? I just moved to NYC and have exceeded in sales but it seems like no one will even look at my resume. I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

What kind of writing do you want to do? If you want to write a novel, you can do that on the side while you make a great income in sales. If you want journalism it will be a little tougher, but you could probably break in by freelancing. To go into journalism really you should have majored in it in college, it is incredibly hard to crack without any experience at all, because so many have great internships and that is who you are competing with.

It really all depends on what you want to do.

i'd suggest taking one of the mb classes (or local university class, etc.) to get your feet wet. you'll meet a teacher with contacts and fellow students. networking is the most important thing in any industry. find out where writers hang out near you. luckily for you, you're in NYC--there are plenty. use your sales experience to pitch a story about the sales biz--or what to do when your career choice is a mistake. keep a journal or start a blog, if you don't already. it'll help with your writing. good luck!

When I said "exceeded in sales" I just meant that I've exceeded the sales goals and quotas that my company has set. I really do appreciate all the advice!
