How realistic is this in the publishing world?

Here's the scenario: a very reputable NYC publisher has their HR communicating with me for a few weeks now. My resume was forwarded internally, and they seem interested. Interested enough that they don't mind that I'm out of state, and that they have to work around my current job schedule. The position they are considering me for would ideally start asap, but I said that I would need until next month to make arrangments and relocate.

I expected them to say I should just contact them whenever I get to New York, but instead they said my timeframe was reasonable and we're going ahead with the phone interview.

Now how do I interpret their interest? They've been extremely amenable to my situation and I need to be in the right frame of mind. Could they possibly make a job offer over the phone?

Sorry for the long post. You may now impart wisdom on this young college graduate.

Probably not, but they might use the phone interview to gauge whether it's worth flying you to New York for a final interview.

I don't think you're going to get a job offer over the phone. It sounds like they're interested in you, and if the phone call goes well, they may invite you to interview in person.

It's very unlikely that any employer would hire you without a face-to-face meeting. I've only ever known one person who was hired sight unseen over the phone -- the job was in Philadelphia, and at the time, she was living in Hawaii.

I was hired over the phone ...
...once.

Network television writing position. Executive producer (whom I'd never met) called me up out of the blue and asked if I'd be interested. I said yes. The whole call lasted 90 seconds.

My thoughts exactly...I'm really not expecting any offer except hopefully for a second interview. All things considered, all of the constant communication with this publisher has gotten me really excited and I needed people here to say "you're not getting a job offer"
so, thank you?

You might get a job offer.
Yes, it's true. Don't let the naysayers sway you.

Since your resume was forwarded by someone already working there it's certainly possible.

From personal experience, a company flew me in based on a phone interview, as I was basically the short-listed candidate, and I was offered the position, though I ultimately didn't end up taking the job for various reasons.

WritingSoul - what kind of position was that for? in book publishing, I would hardly expect anyone to fly me in for an interview when there are easily 50 people down the street who would want it.

ManhattanMatt - your positivity was encouraging, albeit surprising.

I was hired over the phone too. It was an unusual scenario though, as they knew I had an offer on the table, and the hiring manager was across the country.

It's not typical though. Most likely, it's an initial phone screen and if it goes well, they'll bring you in for a face-to-face. Almost all of my interviews with candidates start this way, as it helps save time for all involved.
