| pamelabeth | Posted 11/17/2007 8:09:54 PM | show profile so last week, i almost got clipped by a bus. it was one of those apparently not-uncommon situations where i was crossing the street with the light, in the crosswalk, and the bus driver turning at the intersection apparently did not see me. i ran out of the way, waving my arms; he saw me at the last second and slammed on the breaks. it should not happen that a bus driver does not see a pedestrian in a crosswalk; but nonetheless, it seems to be happening a lot in this town. anyway, it has me wondering--what if a freelancer is laid up for a month, or six months, or more? i know i pay into disability insurance; but i don't know anything about how long disability takes to kick in. if it takes a month, for example, and you're only out of commision for a month, that's fairly useless. and if it takes like 9 months, one could go broke waiting. i guess, if i'd gotten hit by a bus, i'd be *lucky* to have to worry about disability. but seriously--when a freelancer is taken out of commision for a bit, how do these things go? |
