OK, so I follow the guidelines in MB's "How to Pitch" guide for SELF, and the email won't go through. Apparently, they have a block of some sort; my error message is "access denied." So here's my question: Is the info in the HTP incorrect? If not, why would SELF allow an HTP to be written about them if they truly don't want to hear from freelancers? Very annoying.

Lenagrove, what kind of email account are you using? Sometimes free emails, like Yahoo and AOL, get blocked by corporations. It's a spam-filter thing, but sometimes freelance queries can get caught up in it.

Also, some companies filter out messages based on content. For instance, if you were pitching a story about breast health, it might get bounced because of the word "breast." I'm not saying it always makes sense, but do think if any verbiage in your pitch could have triggered a rejection.

Hope this helps!

Thanks--I have a comcast email account, which usually works. I did put "query" in the subject line, but I thought that was helpful to the editors. You make a good point, though--thanks again.

Did you pitch Ana Mantica? The HTP doesn't include her last name in her email addy it provides but it's firstname_lastname. Maybe that's the issue?

I've pitched to Ana Mantica twice through my Gmail account, and she's got back to me on both occasions.

I've exchanged e-mails with others on their editorial board, too, and it's never been a problem.

Their e-mail format is firstname_lastname@codenast.com/firstname_lastname@self.com.

I've always used the condenast one.
