| Newsy | Posted 11/24/2007 2:13:07 PM | show profile I've been trying to pitch CG! and Seventeen for almost 6 months now with no luck. I've emailed the editors, called to follow-up and still nothing. Does anyone have any success stories? What's the secret here? Thanks! |
| Canadiana | Posted 11/24/2007 6:49:19 PM | show profile Do you mean they never replied or always said "no thanks" to your attempts? Haven't pitched them before but am curious to see what transpires! |
| Newsy | Posted 11/24/2007 7:30:01 PM | show profile Hi -- I've never heard back, one way or another. |
| Letterbox | Posted 11/24/2007 7:32:13 PM | show profile Editors get a lot of pitches so you shouldn't take it personally if they don't get back to you. Many editors will only respond to stories they are interested in or at least come close to what they want. They'll ignore the pitches that are way off base or show no knowledge of the magazine. Instead, you should evaluate what you're pitching and how you're pitching. |
| lenagrove | Posted 11/24/2007 11:19:29 PM | show profile It took me a couple of years to break into SEVENTEEN. I remember feeling the same frustration you describe. I would say "hang in there and keep trying," but here's what I've heard as of late: SEVENTEEN is using almost no freelance these days, and if they do, it's writers they're already familiar with. That said, if you have an amazing story and access to the subject, it would be hard for them to turn you down. I'm not sure about CG!--never written for them. Good luck. |
| D_S | Posted 11/25/2007 11:15:58 AM | show profile You want to crack the teen market? Why not start with middle-of-the-road mags like Girls' Life, New Moon, etc.? Not to dissuade you, but if you don't have relevant clips from other glossies, Seventeen and CG are going to prove tough nuts. Hearst pubs are so big on the writer's portfolio; they wouldn't look into your pitches if there's no mention of national credits. |
| seeattleme | Posted 11/26/2007 12:49:20 PM | show profile a recent posts (s) on this topic stated that both magazines aren't really using freelancers anymore, except the occasional overseas story , like teenage iraquis, or whatever. it's ot like either magazine has the money these days. Seventeen is a pamphlet, and CG is losing money left and right. |
