What are your thoughts on charging commission per placement to clients? Should it be avoided?

Some people do it, but in my experience it's either been firms/practitioners with little experience or who are so hungry to make a name for themselves that they do it.

I sincerely view my PR practice as any other professional service, meaning that clients are engaging me for my expertise, much like they do a lawyer or accountant. Just like a lawyer can't guarantee they'll win your case or an accountant can't guarantee you won't get audited, nobody can guarantee a specific result from a PR effort.

However, it's pretty easy to look at a practitioner or firm's track record over a given period of time and see whether they know what they're doing. If a client's confident of that, then the only thing remaining to discuss is rates. There, I personally never aim to be the cheapest, as that's a losing-sum game, but I do give my clients value and companies that will be good clients recognize that.
